In a previous interview 《Is ESG a Challenge or Opportunity for Success? Huang Guan Hua, CEO of The New Wide Group, Co-Founder of Smart Capital: It’s The Path for Living!》, Huang Guan Hua(Sunny), CEO of The New Wide Group and Co-Founder of Smart Capital, mentioned, compared to numerous entrepreneurs who considered the ESG as an extra cost or even sacrifice companies’ profits, he believes it is the cure for enterprises to “survive.”
The new keyword that was established in the company for environmental protection, D3, means the combination of three dimensions: Development, Design and Data, for creating the material that possesses more valuable sustainability.
Why insist on it? Sunny elaborated one of his own experiences from the past which dwells in his memory, “Textile sectors’ dye jeopardize the environment seriously, which I read from the newspaper many factories had dumped the contaminated water right into the river, causing the river pavonine, you can tell the next year’s fashion by the color of the river!”
The release of the dye polluted not only the water, the gas that volatilized from it polluted the air as well. At that time, Sunny was laughed at by others due to his action of building a sewage treatment plant and water reclaim system, which he wanted to decrease the damage to the environment, however, his doings also increased the cost dramatically. Sunny gave a wry smile and said.
“ My production’s cost is even higher than others’ price! I really had no idea how to cut the mustard then.” Even though being mocked or having loss, Sunny still practices what he preaches. “If we consider it a good deed, then we will fulfill it, no matter what it takes.”
As expected, time will tell.
After a period of time, owing to the out of hand pollution to the river which even directly affected the household, the government started to strengthen the regulation by shutting down the unqualified factories or restricting their supply chain. However, among all of these factories, Sunny’s had become the one and only factory to establish the example for the environmentally-conscious so that during the circumstances, New Wide Group had become the best and stable choice for those sportswear brands.
After the give back from endeavor, Sunny dedicated himself to the connection between factory and environmental protection, including purchasing numerous solar panels for the clean energy and the recruit CSO, who is responsible for supervising the emissions of the factory and keep initiating the ESG with NGO and vertical supply chain manufacturers. Soon enough, his factory in Vietnam set an example since it was awarded the Golden Certificate.
“ Let me emphasize it, once again, the ESG might be a cost if we judge it on its appearance, but it is actually an investment. It is because I dedicated myself to the sustainable development of the environment and green energy that plenty of industries have chosen to cooperate with me. It isn’t because of me who strives for the opportunity, instead, it is because I promoted the ESG and it offered me the opportunity.
Sunny is grateful for the return that ESG gave him, he considers himself has the responsibility to accelerate the manufacturers and entrepreneurs to protect the environment. “It is meaningful when all of us share the same goals!”
