The Chinese film industry has lost another irreplaceable star. Renowned for her title as the “Martial Arts Queen,” Hong Kong star Cheng Pei-Pei passed away in the United States on July 17, 2024, at the age of 78 due to illness. After her death, she donated her brain for medical research, showcasing her spirit of selfless dedication.

Throughout her acting career, Cheng Pei-Pei became an eternal symbol in the film industry with her outstanding performances in classic movies such as “Come Drink with Me” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” She created numerous unforgettable characters with her blend of strong and gentle acting and sharp martial arts moves, earning high praise from both audiences and critics. Besides these classic works, Cheng Pei-Pei also starred in popular movies like “Shaolin Temple” and “Dream of the Red Chamber.” In her later years, she actively promoted the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), leaving a profound impact on the world. Cheng Pei-Pei not only left an indelible mark in the film industry but also impressed with her efforts in public welfare and environmental protection.

“My Fate is Mine, Not Heaven’s” — The Legendary Career of Cheng Pei-Pei

Cheng Pei-Pei was born in Shanghai and showed a passion for acting from a young age. She entered the film industry in the 1960s and quickly rose to fame with her role as the heroine “Golden Swallow” in “Come Drink with Me.” Following this, she starred in numerous martial arts films, becoming an iconic figure in the Hong Kong film industry. Cheng Pei-Pei’s acting style was known for its blend of strength and grace, allowing her to portray strong, heroic women while maintaining feminine elegance.

In addition to her superb martial arts skills, Cheng Pei-Pei won the audience’s hearts with her deep understanding of her roles and emotional investment in them. She displayed both a powerful martial artist’s side and a delicate, tender side, making her a unique presence in the film industry. Cheng Pei-Pei once said, “I believe every character has a unique story, and I hope to convey the inner world of these characters through my performance.” This approach to acting earned her great acclaim and numerous awards throughout her career.

A Steadfast Commitment to Changing Children’s Futures

After leaving the film industry, Cheng Pei-Pei dedicated more of her energy to public welfare. She actively participated in charitable activities, particularly focusing on children’s education and health. She attended numerous charity events, raising funds for children in impoverished areas, and donated to schools and medical facilities. Cheng Pei-Pei once said, “Education is the key to changing children’s futures. We have a responsibility to help those in need, giving them the opportunity to receive an education and live a better life.”

At a charity event, she remarked, “Seeing those children’s smiles makes everything worthwhile. Every child should have the chance to go to school, and this is a goal we should strive to achieve as a society.”

Cheng Pei-Pei was also involved in several international charitable organizations. She frequently traveled to impoverished regions in Africa and Asia, personally visiting the children there and providing supplies and educational resources. She once said, “Every time I see those children’s eyes, I feel that we have not done enough. Only through our efforts can we truly change their destinies.”

Cheng Pei-Pei’s Environmental Mission: A Steadfast Belief in Promoting Sustainable Development

In her later years, Cheng Pei-Pei actively promoted the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), dedicating herself to environmental protection and social welfare. She participated in numerous environmental activities, advocating for reducing carbon footprints and using renewable energy. At an environmental conference, she once said, “Each of us can contribute to environmental protection by starting with small actions like reducing plastic use and conserving energy. The future belongs to our descendants, and we have a responsibility to protect this planet.”

Cheng Pei-Pei emphasized the importance of sustainable development, not only in terms of environmental protection but also in achieving social and economic harmony. She believed in balanced development that benefits everyone, especially vulnerable populations. Cheng Pei-Pei actively attended various international conferences, advocating for global cooperation in promoting environmental protection and social justice. She firmly believed that only by achieving a balance between the environment, economy, and society can we ensure a healthy and safe living environment for future generations. Cheng Pei-Pei also mentioned, “In modern society, each of us has a responsibility to engage in environmental actions. This is not only for ourselves but also for our future generations. We should work together to create a better future.”

Final Act of Charity: Donating Her Brain to Aid Medical Research

Even in the final stages of her life, Cheng Pei-Pei did not forget her dedication to public welfare. She chose to donate her brain for medical research, hoping to contribute to the advancement of medicine. Her family revealed that Cheng Pei-Pei had always been concerned about health issues and wanted to help more people through her donation.

Her son, Yuan He-Yu, stated on social media, “Mom has always been a selfless person. Even in her final days, she hoped to help others through her actions.” Cheng Pei-Pei’s spirit of selfless dedication touched countless people, with many sharing her story on social media, expressing their admiration and remembrance.

Cheng Pei-Pei’s life was a legendary journey filled with selfless contributions that impacted many, leaving an indelible mark on both the film industry and public welfare. Her spirit will forever inspire future generations to follow in her footsteps and work together for a sustainable future.

In an interview discussing her philanthropic beliefs, Cheng Pei-Pei said, “I believe everyone has the power to change the world. We just need to start with ourselves, start small, and gradually build up, which can lead to significant changes.”

Cheng Pei-Pei’s passing is a great loss to both the film industry and the philanthropic community, but her spirit and influence will remain in people’s hearts forever. Her life was a perfect blend of passion for art and selfless dedication to society, and her story will inspire generations to strive for a better future.
