Nigar Arpadarai, an influential advocate for international collaboration and sustainable development, has been appointed as the UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29 in Azerbaijan. Announced on COP29’s official X account, Arpadarai’s new role places her at the forefront of global climate advocacy, representing Azerbaijan’s efforts in one of the most impactful climate conferences of the year. Her extensive background in international relations, government affairs, and public communication makes her an ideal choice for this pivotal position.

From Parliament to Global Climate Advocacy: Arpadarai’s Path to COP29

Arpadarai, an independent member of the Milli Majlis, has represented one of Baku city’s central constituencies since 2020. Her political journey is built on a robust foundation of 15 years of professional experience in international organizations, sports, and telecommunications. Before her parliamentary role, she served as the Director of Marketing and Communications and the official spokesperson for the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, playing a vital role since its inception in 2016. Her leadership in this high-profile international event underscores her expertise in bringing Azerbaijan’s voice to the global stage.

Beyond her parliamentary work, Arpadarai chairs the Working Group on Azerbaijan-Portugal Inter-Parliamentary Relations, showcasing her commitment to fostering strong international partnerships. She is also an active member of the Foreign and Inter-Parliamentary Relations Committee and the Family, Women and Children Committee—positions that underscore her dedication to both global diplomacy and community welfare.

Driving Climate Action and Advocacy for Azerbaijan

As UN Climate Change High-Level Champion, Arpadarai’s primary focus will be on galvanizing support for ambitious climate initiatives and fostering collaboration between governments, businesses, and civil society. Her role is crucial in highlighting the challenges and opportunities for developing nations like Azerbaijan, particularly in balancing economic growth with sustainable practices. Arpadarai’s background in both law and international relations, with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Baku State University, equips her well to navigate the complex legal and diplomatic landscapes of climate negotiations.

In addition to her political and climate advocacy roles, Arpadarai serves as the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Azerbaijan National Anti-Doping Agency (AMADA), where she champions integrity in sports—another testament to her commitment to fairness and accountability, values she aims to bring to her climate work.

Arpadarai’s appointment as UN Climate Change High-Level Champion signals a step forward for Azerbaijan in its climate commitments. Her expertise in international relations, communication, and her dedication to impactful governance will be instrumental in ensuring that COP29 delivers actionable outcomes.

“Climate change is the defining issue of our time, and COP29 represents a critical opportunity for global leaders to unite towards meaningful action,” Arpadarai stated. “I am committed to bringing Azerbaijan’s voice and vision to the forefront, ensuring that our contributions to climate action resonate on the world stage.”
