Inside a bright, design-focused studio, the Artshirt team is deeply immersed in fabrics and design drafts. Each uniform is born from a seamless fusion of aesthetics and functionality. In an exclusive interview with《The Icons》magazine, CEO Ellen Wei remarked, “Our ambition goes beyond producing corporate uniforms — we want to create a global platform that showcases the talent of Taiwan’s fashion designers.”

Launching Next-Generation Functional Fabrics — Where Beauty Meets Sustainability

In recent years, corporate procurement and marketing departments have expressed evolving expectations for team uniforms. No longer seen as mere essentials, uniforms are increasingly expected to embody both brand identity and advanced performance features.

“Many companies now want uniforms that go beyond snag resistance and moisture-wicking; they want garments that are stylish, reinforce their brand, and even enhance employees’ confidence and willingness to wear them,” says Ellen Wei. In response, Artshirt initiated an R&D programme focused on high-performance fabrics — not only enhancing functionality but embedding sustainability from the ground up.

This innovation drive redefined both design logic and supply chain strategy. The team partnered with domestic and international suppliers to develop new eco-friendly performance fabrics. The resulting uniforms are durable, comfortable and structured — and crucially, align with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals. This is more than material innovation; it is a redefinition of clothing as a vehicle for corporate responsibility.

Collaborating with fabric suppliers at home and abroad, Artshirt develops high-performance textiles that meet durability, comfort, and ESG standards. (Photography: Artshirt)

The Seamless Fusion of Design and Sustainability

In 2021, Artshirt officially integrated ESG principles into its core development strategy, actively exploring and applying sustainable materials. Among its most notable achievements is a fabric co-developed with suppliers, made from discarded oyster shells sourced from Chiayi’s Dongshi and Tainan’s Qigu regions.

Discarded oyster shells from Chiayi and Tainan are transformed into functional, eco-conscious fabrics by Artshirt. (Photography: Artshirt)

This textile boasts antibacterial, deodorising, moisture-absorbing, quick-drying and UV-resistant properties, while also regulating body temperature — ideal for Taiwan’s humid and sticky climate. It has already been adopted by numerous enterprises.

“This is a win–win solution,” Wei explains confidently. “Companies receive high-quality uniforms and reduce replacement frequency, thereby advancing their sustainability goals.”

Artshirt’s high-performance fabrics are widely adopted across industries, delivering both quality and sustainability for diverse work environments. (Photography: Artshirt)

Championing ESG Through Uniform Innovation

In driving ESG practice, Artshirt has reimagined uniforms not merely as tools for corporate identity, but as carriers of sustainable values. Since 2021, the brand has aligned its development with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Through concrete action, the brand is helping companies turn sustainability pledges into reality.

“We believe the true value of a uniform lies not only in its cut or design, but in the positive impact it brings to society and the environment,” Wei notes.

Practically, Artshirt’s sustainable apparel has been adopted in full by the Yunlin County Government — an initiative that not only enhances the region’s green credentials, but has also earned recognition at national level as a model of ESG in the public sector.

On the production side, the company embraces circular economy principles, using eco-friendly fibres made from recycled PET bottles and oyster shells. Offcuts are transformed into industrial cleaning cloths or recycled by large manufacturers, ensuring material is reused across the supply chain. This commitment to zero-waste design reflects a deeper ethos.

“Every design decision reflects a value choice. Choosing environmentally responsible options is our way of responding to both market and societal expectations,” Wei emphasises. “Sustainability isn’t just a design philosophy — it’s embedded in our daily operations.”

The company has implemented paperless processes and digital management systems, improving operational efficiency while reducing paper and administrative waste. For Wei, these operational details are essential to authentic sustainability: “Sustainability isn’t defined by one eco-friendly fabric. It’s defined by a brand’s willingness to take responsibility in every choice it makes.”

As of the end of 2024, Artshirt has delivered over 100,000 ESG-aligned uniforms to clients ranging from government agencies to construction, technology, and brand enterprises. For Wei, the numbers reflect a meaningful journey — and a source of immense pride.

“This isn’t just a uniform revolution. It’s a collective shift in how enterprises express their values. When a brand chooses to weave responsibility into its fabric and sustainability into its silhouette, every uniform becomes a statement of vision and commitment.”

Artshirt places SDGs 4, 5, 12, and 13 at the heart of its design and production, embodying ESG values through every step of the process.
Comprehensive Uniform Solutions That Strengthen Brand Identity

More than a manufacturer, Artshirt positions itself as a strategic partner in corporate apparel. From needs analysis and fabric selection to design, production, and delivery — every stage is carried out in Taiwan. The company ensures stable sizing systems and flexible restocking mechanisms to address long-term supply continuity for its clients.

“Uniforms cannot follow a one-size-fits-all approach,” Wei states. “Design must reflect the unique needs of each industry and work environment.”

Providing end-to-end services from design to delivery, Artshirt serves as a strategic partner in corporate apparel, ensuring reliable supply and local manufacturing in Taiwan. (Photography: Artshirt)

From scrubs for healthcare professionals and industrial workwear for factories and field operations, to polos and shirts for tech brands seeking visual cohesion, Artshirt offers a wide range of products that span both functional and formal needs. The team also tailors garments for trade shows, team-building events, and high-precision workspaces.

“There are many forms a uniform can take, but its essence is constant: to help each person feel supported and recognised in their role.”

Wei notes that the most enduring partnerships are not built on pricing, but on aligned values.

Offering a wide range of team uniform options, Artshirt caters to the functional and branding needs of various industries. (Photography: Artshirt)

Clients in construction prioritise durability, windproofing and breathability due to variable on-site conditions. Technology firms focus on durability, ESG alignment and forward-looking design. Branding-focused companies seek apparel that conveys identity externally while ensuring employee comfort internally.

“We never aim for one-off collaborations. Our goal is to become our clients’ long-term partner in uniform design and sustainable development.”

These diverse requirements have shaped Artshirt into more than a manufacturer — it acts as a design consultant, standing shoulder to shoulder with clients. Every detail, from design to fabric to comfort, is considered through the lens of corporate identity and culture.

“For us, the most rewarding moment isn’t the delivery of a uniform — it’s seeing an employee wear it and feel, ‘I belong here’. That spark of pride and connection is what drives us forward.”

Combining performance with brand identity, Art of Uniform has earned the long-term trust of clients in construction, technology, and consumer sectors. (Photography: Artshirt)

From Taiwan to the World: Elevating Sustainable Textiles on the Global Stage

Looking ahead, Ellen Wei and her team are preparing to participate in COP30, the United Nations Climate Change Conference. It’s a rare opportunity to present Taiwan’s sustainable textile innovation on a global platform — not merely as brand promotion, but as a profound dialogue between industry and climate responsibility.

Wei is also leading efforts to ensure that over 50% of the company’s product line is made with sustainable fabrics. A dedicated sustainability team has been established to focus on employee education, cross-industry collaboration, and materials R&D — ensuring that sustainability is not a slogan, but an integral part of the brand’s rhythm and identity.

“We’ve never seen ourselves merely as a uniform supplier,” she concludes. “Our mission is to design garments that express a company’s values and beliefs. Starting from Taiwan, we want the world to see how we work — not through slogans, but through every piece we create, responding to this era’s call for beauty and responsibility.”

The company has established a dedicated ESG task force to drive employee education, cross-industry collaboration, and continuous innovation.

The Global Baku Summit of Religious Leaders gathered under the theme “World Religions for a Green Planet” as part of COP29, presenting a powerful moment for faith communities worldwide to champion environmental sustainability. Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, addressed the assembly with a call to action, underscoring the urgency of a united response to global crises.

“The world is currently facing colossal catastrophes. Our religious beliefs are of great power. We do not believe in relativity and individuality. Our actions should be based on building our future,” Cardinal Gugerotti said, speaking to representatives of diverse religions and organizations. As faith leaders converged on this shared vision, they explored ways to channel the moral and ethical strengths of their communities towards climate resilience and environmental stewardship.

Faith’s Power: A Unified Stand Against Climate Crisis

Highlighting the event’s importance, Cardinal Gugerotti commended the commitment of religious figures and institutions worldwide to safeguarding the planet. “This event is focused on protecting our planet,” he said. Such sentiments reflect a growing recognition among faith communities that environmental action is not merely a social or economic issue, but a moral imperative. By using religious influence to inspire millions of adherents, these leaders are determined to push for sustainable practices that honor both creation and humanity.

The summit provided a platform to reaffirm shared values while discussing collaborative strategies to address urgent environmental issues. With climate change affecting vulnerable populations disproportionately, religious leaders emphasized their role in advocating for ethical and compassionate responses to these challenges. They acknowledged the potential for collective action to drive meaningful change, leveraging the reach of faith institutions to engage communities in climate-conscious living.

An Ethical Obligation: Protecting the Planet Can’t Wait

Cardinal Gugerotti elaborated on the spiritual dimension of environmental preservation, calling on humanity to honor its relationship with the earth. “A person should live a decent life. The individual is the fruit of love of the earth. The individual is not a combination of simple chemical elements, but an embodiment of love,” he stated, emphasizing that each person’s existence is intertwined with the planet’s health. He warned of the impending dangers of inaction, reminding the audience that humanity’s future hinges on a shared commitment to honoring these values.

“We cannot afford to wait, the danger is approaching. What happens to us depends on how we honor our collective commitments. We must protect our humanity, otherwise wars will escalate, driving us towards destruction,” Cardinal Gugerotti added. His words underscore the belief that environmental sustainability is intrinsically linked to social harmony and global peace. In an era marked by geopolitical tensions and resource scarcity, he argued, failure to safeguard the planet could accelerate conflict, making collaboration across religious and cultural boundaries more essential than ever.

Throughout the summit, faith leaders discussed practical measures to encourage sustainable lifestyles among their followers. Initiatives included promoting renewable energy, reducing waste, and supporting local environmental projects. They emphasized the importance of integrating ecological consciousness into religious teachings and practices, recognising that faith can provide a profound motivation for environmental responsibility.

In an inspiring demonstration of unity, leaders from various faiths pledged to strengthen their advocacy for sustainable policies at both local and international levels. Recognising the potential to influence policy by engaging their communities, they committed to championing climate action as a spiritual and moral obligation.

Bridging Faith and Action

As the summit concluded, participants echoed the sentiment that religious and cultural diversity can be a source of strength in addressing global issues. While religious traditions may differ, they share a common reverence for creation, which can be harnessed to inspire and mobilize collective action. The leaders agreed to continue collaborating, setting aside doctrinal differences to focus on the shared goal of environmental preservation.

Cardinal Gugerotti’s message resonated with attendees, encapsulating the summit’s mission: “Let us build our future by protecting our planet. Together, we have the power to make a difference.” His call to action reflects the belief that humanity’s spiritual heritage holds the key to a sustainable future. As COP29 progresses, the impact of the Global Baku Summit of Religious Leaders serves as a reminder of the role faith can play in fostering a collective responsibility for the earth.

By the end of the summit, faith leaders had not only voiced their commitment to sustainability but had also laid the groundwork for continued dialogue and action. The event demonstrated how religious institutions can bridge gaps across cultures, using their influence to advocate for a green planet. Their unity sends a powerful message: the protection of the earth transcends religious boundaries, and through cooperation, a more sustainable and peaceful world is possible.

Mauricio Rodas, former Mayor of Quito, pointed out that the global response to extreme heat, the “silent killer,” remains insufficient. “While many people are discussing climate change, few focus on extreme heat,” Rodas explained. Unlike climate disasters such as hurricanes or floods, extreme heat does not have the same visual impact, as people cannot directly witness deaths caused by high temperatures, leading to lower attention on the issue. He emphasized that extreme heat must be recognized as part of the climate crisis to protect the increasingly vulnerable urban population.

Funding Challenges and the Need for a New Narrative

Rodas highlights that cities face substantial financial challenges in addressing climate change. As more climate responsibilities shift to urban areas, city officials are not only expected to manage infrastructure but also to mitigate extreme weather and climate impacts. However, most cities lack direct financial resources to fulfil these critical roles. Rodas insists that the international financial system needs to be adjusted to support cities in their climate actions. “Over 70% of CO₂ emissions originate from cities; this is where the fight against climate change will be won or lost.” He calls for a realignment of funding to channel resources towards urban infrastructure transformation, essential for meeting the targets of the Paris Agreement.

Driving Adaptive Policies and Shaping a New Narrative

Rodas stresses the importance of reframing the climate change narrative to make it clear that it is not only about the environment but also about improving quality of life. He cites his experience as Mayor of Quito, where he oversaw the construction of the city’s first metro line. While the project was part of the city’s climate response, it primarily improved residents’ commuting experiences. Rodas believes that climate policies and projects must be closely tied to public well-being to encourage more city leaders to engage. “If mayors understand that climate initiatives are about enhancing and safeguarding lives, they will be far more inclined to support them,” he says.

In his final call to action, Rodas urges, “We cannot waste any more time. Extreme heat is claiming lives, and we need to act boldly and urgently.” As global temperatures rise, the Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Centre has launched the Extreme Heat Resilience Alliance (EHRA) and the “City Champions for Heat Action” initiative. These programmes aim to support cities worldwide in implementing measures to address extreme heat, ultimately protecting the health and lives of urban residents.

As the urgency of climate change intensifies, the global demand for clean energy has surged significantly. Azerbaijan, rich in solar and wind resources, is actively exploring its potential as a green energy exporter. Umud Shokri, an energy strategist and foreign policy advisor based in Washington, is optimistic about Azerbaijan’s future. He believes that Azerbaijan’s geographical advantages and supportive policies will position it as a key supplier of renewable energy. Shokri’s insights delve into Azerbaijan’s policy direction, technological challenges, and international cooperation:

“Azerbaijan possesses all the attributes to become a major renewable energy exporter. This shift is not just about transforming energy policy; it’s an integral part of our commitment to climate action.”

From Goal Setting to Green Energy Deployment

The Azerbaijani government has made strong policy commitments in the renewable energy sector. Umud Shokri emphasises, “Government support is crucial, not only in financial subsidies but through comprehensive infrastructure and policy initiatives.” Azerbaijan has set a target to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2050, with plans to establish green energy zones in the liberated areas, particularly in the Karabakh and East Zangazur regions, utilising hydropower, wind, and solar energy to achieve self-sufficiency in these areas.

Azerbaijan’s policy push spans extensive infrastructure projects, including enhancing the reliability of the domestic power grid and expanding transnational energy export channels. Shokri believes these infrastructure improvements will provide a solid foundation for Azerbaijan to reach its renewable energy export goals. “Beyond domestic demand, we must consider how to channel energy exports to the European market, which requires a stable and efficient transmission network,” he explains. In his view, building transnational transmission lines not only strengthens Azerbaijan’s energy supply stability but also brings significant economic benefits to the nation.

Addressing Energy Storage Challenges and Enhancing Grid Resilience

However, advancing renewable energy is not without its challenges. Shokri notes, “Technology and cost remain hurdles, especially in energy storage and grid integration.” Renewable energy sources, particularly solar and wind, are intermittent, posing challenges to grid stability when continuous power supply cannot be guaranteed. To address this, Azerbaijan is exploring more cost-effective energy storage technologies and grid optimisation solutions to ensure stable power supply even during off-peak periods.

Additionally, Shokri believes that Azerbaijan can benefit from global technological innovations, particularly in energy digitisation and the advancement of smart grids. “The application of smart grids will enhance energy efficiency, reduce losses, and allow for more flexible energy output adjustment.” In his view, if Azerbaijan can seize these opportunities in technological innovation, it will not only improve the stability of domestic energy supply but also strengthen international confidence in Azerbaijan as a reliable green energy supplier.

Building a Green Energy Corridor Connecting Central Asia and Europe

Shokri believes that international cooperation is a crucial factor for Azerbaijan’s success as a green energy exporter. “We need to establish solid partnerships with neighbouring countries and Europe to ensure Azerbaijan’s energy exports are stable and competitive.” Azerbaijan is exploring the possibility of creating a green energy corridor with the European Union, which would help deliver renewable energy to Europe to meet the growing demand for clean power.

In promoting international collaboration, Shokri also highlights Azerbaijan’s unparalleled geographical advantage in connecting Central Asia with European markets. “Azerbaijan’s location enables us to serve as an energy bridge between Central Asia and Europe, especially in emerging fields like green hydrogen.” By attracting international investment and advanced technologies, Azerbaijan can accelerate its own renewable energy transition while positioning itself as a major clean energy supplier in the region.

Stepping Towards a Central Role in the Clean Energy Market

Against the backdrop of a global push for energy transition, Azerbaijan is steadily establishing itself in the green energy sector. “Azerbaijan has the potential to become a significant player in the global clean energy market, benefiting not only its own economy but also contributing to worldwide carbon neutrality goals.” With international forums such as COP29 bringing renewed focus to its role in the global energy market, Azerbaijan is increasingly in the spotlight. By effectively harnessing its resources, strengthening its technological foundation, and expanding international cooperation, Azerbaijan can meet its domestic energy needs while taking on a more influential role on the international stage.

Umud Shokri’s insights reveal Azerbaijan’s potential as an emerging green energy leader. With strong government support and advancing technologies, Azerbaijan is poised to become an integral part of the global renewable energy market, helping to drive forward the ambitious goals of sustainable development worldwide.

Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and former Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, underscores the importance of nature conservation and restoration for businesses. With the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework approved at COP15, there is an increased global recognition of nature’s value. Mrema states, “Today, approximately 50% of the world’s economic value depends on natural resources, and this has spurred widespread awareness within the corporate sector on the importance of biodiversity protection.”

The Cost and Value of Action

Amid increasingly frequent extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves, Mrema warns that inaction will lead to even more severe social and economic consequences. She points out that climate change and the biodiversity crisis are intertwined, resulting in impacts such as rising food prices and declines in GDP. She emphasises, “The health of ecosystems is the foundation of our economic stability, and investing in nature conservation can foster resilience and create long-term economic benefits.”

Integrating Nature into Net Zero Strategies: Challenges and Future Prospects

Mrema mentions that, to incorporate nature conservation within net zero targets, governments and businesses must reassess financial policies to redirect funds toward ecological restoration projects. She argues that nature conservation should be embedded within financial decision-making processes, rather than left solely to sustainability departments. “Protecting nature isn’t just an issue for environmental departments; it’s a shared responsibility across our policy and economic systems.”

Emma Howard Boyd CBE, Chair of the London Climate Resilience Review and Global Ambassador for Race to Resilience, underscores the urgency for London to prepare for extreme weather events. Commissioned by the Mayor of London, the Review aims to assess the impact of recent severe weather, such as the 2021 floods and the 2022 heatwave, which revealed significant gaps in the city’s readiness. “London is underprepared for the climate risks it faces, especially as temperatures continue to rise,” says Emma.

Strengthening Infrastructure Against Climate Change

London has taken steps to bolster flood defences, notably with the Thames Barrier, completed in 1982. However, with rising sea levels, this system now requires urgent upgrades. The interim report from the London Resilience Review recommends raising embankments along the Thames, originally planned for 2065, by 2050 to counter sea-level rise and storm surges. Emma notes that this initiative is “a crucial step to safeguard London’s future.”

Learning from Global Urban Resilience Efforts

Emma highlights the value other cities can draw from London’s experience. She points out that many cities are currently preparing for individual climate hazards, such as heatwaves or flooding, yet overlook the interconnected impacts of multiple hazards. She cites the example of Dhaka appointing its first “Chief Heat Officer” in response to rising temperatures, an action that may serve as a model for cities worldwide. Emma insists that cities must act with “pace rather than perfection” to effectively address the increasing frequency of climate threats.

Resilience Funding and Policy Challenges

Emma stresses the need for a global re-evaluation of “adaptation finance,” ensuring that climate resilience remains a core consideration in all investments to avoid the risk of future “stranded assets.” She asserts that resilience must be incorporated into financial decision-making within both public and private sectors, as this is essential for cities to meet the growing demands of climate adaptation.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, delivered a compelling address at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, focusing on the COP29 Presidency’s priorities. Bayramov highlighted the critical need for fully functional carbon markets as a vital step in achieving national climate targets. “The COP29 Presidency is working with all Parties to reach a resolution on carbon markets this year. A well-established carbon market will be a significant step towards cost-effective fulfilment of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and enhancing mitigation efforts,” he stated.

COP29 Presidency’s Ambitious Agenda on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance

To support a comprehensive approach, Azerbaijan has proposed 14 initiatives that span various aspects of climate and sustainability. These include connections between climate action and sustainable development goals, the establishment of green energy zones and corridors, innovations in energy storage, support for climate resilience, advancements in agriculture, clean hydrogen, methane reduction from organic waste, and green digital action.

Among these, the COP29 Action Agenda introduces the Climate Finance Action Fund—an innovative climate finance source, to be funded voluntarily by fossil fuel-producing countries and corporations.

Building Peace Amidst Climate Challenges

Bayramov emphasised that COP29 offers a unique opportunity to bridge divides and contribute both to global peace and the climate agenda. Given the intensifying challenges posed by the global climate crisis, Azerbaijan has put forward the COP29 Truce Initiative, part of a Joint Solemn Appeal issued recently. This initiative encourages parties to set aside differences for the duration of COP29 to allow for collective progress on urgent climate goals. “Over a thousand NGOs, faith leaders, prominent figures, and numerous parties have already joined this Appeal. We call on all to put political divergences aside, stand united, and honour the Truce throughout COP29,” Bayramov urged.

Bayramov’s address highlighted Azerbaijan’s commitment to ambitious climate action, financial innovation, and promoting unity, emphasising that these initiatives will drive momentum toward a more sustainable and peaceful global future.
