										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>During the CogX Festival held in the UK, Dr. James Yang, representing Taiwan&#8217;s  Arculus System Co., Ltd. , shared his views on Taiwan-UK industry relations, especially in the semiconductor field, in an interview with &#8220;The Icons&#8221; Aiken&#8217;s International Celebrity Magazine. He provided a profound and unique analysis of the UK market, suggesting that the potential of the UK in the semiconductor sector has not been fully exploited and that Taiwan has the capability and should play a key role.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Beyond ARM: Comprehensive Development Opportunities in the UK&#8217;s Semiconductor Industry Chain</strong></h2>



<p>&#8220;When it comes to the association between the UK and the semiconductor industry, the first thing that comes to mind is the success story of ARM. Undoubtedly, ARM is indeed a shining jewel, but it is only a part of the entire industry chain,&#8221; Dr. James Yang pointed out. Many people&#8217;s understanding of IP might remain superficial. &#8220;IP (Intellectual Property) business is extremely important, yet it does not involve the physical operation of hardware and electrical signals. IP is like a programming language; you can use it to write a program to run a certain function. But this does not mean you know how to design a computer.&#8221;</p>



<p>Dr. James Yang believes that the UK needs to establish its own semiconductor industry ecosystem, rather than just relying on IP. &#8220;This requires comprehensive development from IC design to foundry services, and then to final manufacturing. The UK currently lacks large and well-known companies in the semiconductor design field. Of course, it does not have its own foundry either.&#8221;</p>



<p>In Dr. James Yang&#8217;s view, this is an opportunity for Taiwanese companies to enter the market and provide a one-stop service from IC design to final production.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Green Innovation: ESG and Energy-Saving Transformation in the Semiconductor Industry</strong></h2>



<p>Dr. James Yang further explained the topics of ESG and SCGS, stating, &#8220;ESG is a critical standard for measuring a company&#8217;s performance in sustainable development. SCGS, on the other hand, is the practical application of implementing ESG standards in supply chain management.&#8221; He indicated that their company has integrated such philosophies into the development of EDA (Electronic Design Automation) tools.</p>



<p>In further discussion on energy-saving issues, Dr. Yang particularly emphasized that while pursuing technological innovation, the semiconductor industry must consider energy saving as a crucial metric. This applies not only to product design and manufacturing processes but also extends to the entire product lifecycle. Taiwan&#8217;s pivotal role in the global semiconductor supply chain endows it with a unique responsibility to promote energy-saving technologies. Dr. Yang advocates for the use of innovative EDA to foresee and swiftly address future issues from the early stages of product design, thereby driving the entire industry towards a greener and more sustainable direction.</p>



<p>&#8220;Our company ( Arculus System Co., Ltd. )&#8217;s Green EDA tool is developed with this in mind. EDA tools are the core of IC design, determining design efficiency and the energy consumption of the final product. The design mindset of tools from the IDM (Integrated Device Manufacturer) era does not fit the current FABLESS (semiconductor companies without fabrication plants) model. Modern EDA tools should help clients foresee and solve potential energy consumption issues during the design phase.&#8221;</p>



<p>Dr. James Yang provided a customer case to illustrate how using their EDA tool not only improved performance from 1.3G to 3.5G but also significantly reduced R&amp;D time. A task that once required a team of 7-8 people around 4-5 weeks to locate a problem, now can be solved by one person in a few hours, greatly saving the energy consumption that would have been used by several computers operating for a long time.</p>



<p>Therefore,  Arculus System Co., Ltd. &#8216;s Green EDA tool not only helps clients quickly locate issues but also contributes to the global environmental protection effort. Dr. Yang pointed out that many people think the semiconductor industry&#8217;s impact on global carbon emissions mainly comes from factory operations, but in reality, design services and EDA companies can also play an important role upstream. The company is committed to encouraging operators in the semiconductor industry to use their &#8220;Green EDA&#8221; tools, thereby contributing to global carbon emission efforts. Dr. Yang often tells partners that using their Green EDA tools is equivalent to contributing to the global ESG effort.</p>

This is not just a technological innovation but a profound transformation of industry structure and business models.</p>



<p>Dr. James Yang, interviewed by &#8220;The Icons&#8221; Aiken&#8217;s International Celebrity Magazine, is the Chairman of  Arculus System Co., Ltd. , an alumnus of Tsinghua University, and the University of Southern California, and has received a full scholarship to earn his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from New York University, specializing in network routers and security chip research. He has served as a research and development director at top chip design companies in Silicon Valley and the Hsinchu Science Park, holding numerous patents and R&amp;D achievements. <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Compound Semiconductors Drive Innovation in Electric Vehicles, Renewable Energy, and Power Electronics Applications</strong></h2>



<p>Jason Huang provided in-depth insights into the revolutionary contributions of compound semiconductor technology in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and related power electronics applications.</p>



<p>At the recent CogX Festival, he served as a keynote speaker and emphasized the critical role of materials such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) in the power systems of electric vehicles.</p>



<p>These materials, with their excellent heat management capabilities and energy efficiency, not only enhance the performance of power electronics but also contribute to energy savings and carbon reduction, accelerating carbon neutrality goals.</p>



<p>Huang pointed out that besides improving power electronics efficiency, compound semiconductor technologies also contribute to power density, increased product lifespan, reduced system component usage, and aid companies in achieving carbon footprint goals.</p>



<p>&#8220;Efficient energy conversion means less energy is wasted during the conversion process. Taking electric vehicles as an example, this not only reduces operating costs but also minimizes environmental pollution. These innovations are crucial for advancing electric vehicle technology and enhancing market competitiveness.&#8221;</p>



<p>Huang also highlighted the role of compound semiconductor technology in improving the overall lifecycle of electric vehicles. &#8220;Unlike traditional semiconductors that operate only at temperatures between 100 to 150 degrees Celsius, compound semiconductors can function at 250 degrees Celsius. This not only improves durability but also reduces long-term maintenance costs.&#8221; He believes that as these technologies continue to develop and apply, including innovations in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and related power electronics applications, they will become more reliable, more powerful, and more environmentally friendly.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>New Regional Shifts in the Semiconductor Industry Due to Geopolitical Influences</strong></h2>



<p>Huang also discussed the impact of geopolitical influences and the semiconductor wars between countries, affecting the overall development of the renewable energy and electric vehicle industries, and influencing Sentec&#8217;s business expansion. In his view, localization is not only a necessary strategy but also a cross-border corporate responsibility. To promote deep integration into local markets, understanding local consumer needs and through the enthusiastic introduction by local governments to local industries, academic institutions, and research partners, it is possible to accelerate the implementation of local semiconductor strategies and promote green energy technologies to achieve carbon neutrality targets as quickly as possible.</p>



<p>&#8220;Through collaboration with local partners, Sentec can adapt to market changes more rapidly. This cooperation extends beyond product development to include market research, brand promotion, and sales strategies.&#8221;</p>



<p>Huang stated that Sentec aims to become a leader in the electric vehicle, renewable energy, and related power electronics innovation industries. &#8220;This requires a deep understanding of local culture, regulations, and market trends.&#8221; He also acknowledged the challenges brought about by globalization, especially under the trend of carbon neutrality, advocating for international cooperation and resource sharing to advance compound semiconductor technology for the prosperity of Taiwan on the global stage.</p>



<p>Through international collaboration, Sentec can bring the latest global technologies and strategies to local markets while showcasing local innovative ideas and products globally, creating a mutually beneficial situation. Huang believes that governments should play an active role in this process, attracting and motivating local enterprises to invest in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and related power electronics applications through friendly policies and tax incentives.</p>



<p>&#8220;This not only helps enhance the competitiveness of local industries but also accelerates the achievement of national environmental goals. In this context, Sentec seeks to establish partnerships with governments and other stakeholders to jointly promote green transformation and sustainable development.&#8221;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Advancing Industry Standardization</strong></h2>



<p>Currently, Huang is dedicated to assisting in industry standardization, including the Mobility In Harmony Open EV Consortium (MIH Consortium) and the Taiwan Advanced Automotive Technology Development Association (TADA).</p>



<p>Huang pointed out that the goal of industry standardization is the next-generation mobility solution. &#8220;Our current focus is on the next-generation mobility solution. The alliance&#8217;s most important task is to define key technologies, develop reference designs and standards, enabling all members to interoperate, reduce entry barriers, accelerate innovation, and shorten development cycles.&#8221;</p>



<p>The aim is to accelerate the electric vehicle development cycle from four years to two years and reduce development costs by one-third to one-half. The MIH Consortium&#8217;s public model includes three key elements: standardization, modularization, and platformization, significantly lowering the entry barriers for developing electric vehicles and creating an era where everyone has the opportunity to participate in the electric vehicle generation.</p>



<p>Regarding supply chain issues, Huang believes that government policies and tax incentives play a crucial role in promoting supply chain localization: &#8220;Through policy support and tax benefits, local production can enhance its competitiveness, which is particularly important for the localization development of the semiconductor industry.&#8221; He revealed that Sentec focuses on alliances with local partners as part of its global strategy, not only enhancing the efficiency of the industrial chain but also laying the foundation for Sentec&#8217;s expansion in the global market.</p>



<p>Finally, Huang also mentioned how Sentec, through participation in the TADA and the MIH Consortium, contributes to the establishment of electric vehicle technology standards. &#8220;Through standardization, Sentec can bring innovation and market vitality to the electric vehicle industry similar to what Android brought to the smartphone industry!&#8221;</p>

<p>Jason Huang has been the General Manager of Sentec Green Technology since June 2021. With over 23 years of industry experience accumulated at Sentec E&amp;E Co., Ltd, his expertise includes high-frequency AiP and front-end modules, as well as packaging technology for SiC and GaN power modules. Earlier in his career, Huang also had relevant internships at Panasonic Shikoku Electronics and Taiwan Microelectronics Technologies. He received the Cutting-edge Technology Award at the 2020 World New Energy Vehicle Congress.</p>

With his rich industry experience and forward-looking perspective, Chairman Chen provided profound insights into the future trends and sustainable development of the semiconductor industry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Sustainable Development and Challenges in the AI Industry</strong></h2>



<p>Chairman Chen first pointed out that the semiconductor industry is undergoing a rapid transformation, with the rapid development of high-performance computing and the AI technologies bringing infinite possibilities to the industry. However, this progress also poses challenges such as increased energy consumption and costs.</p>



<p>&#8220;Especially the energy consumption caused by the AI technology has become a significant bottleneck restricting the continuous development of the industry. Additionally, the AI computations require a large amount of energy due to extensive data processing and complex algorithm calculations, leading to high energy consumption and heat generation.&#8221;</p>



<p>He emphasized the importance of sustainable development and explained that it is not just an abstract concept but a very practical and urgent need. He noted, &#8220;Energy is a crucial component of ESG, and without sufficient energy, the operation of the AI&nbsp; becomes impossible.&#8221;</p>



<p>Chairman Chen also mentioned the current interconnection between the semiconductor industry and ESG goals, emphasizing the importance of addressing energy consumption issues.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Furthermore, with the ongoing development of the AI industry, the demand for energy will continue to rise, potentially becoming a bottleneck for future development.</p>



<p>Discussing how to promote sustainable development, Chairman Chen proposed a unique perspective. He believes that to achieve the sustainable development of the industry, there needs to be global standards to limit the energy consumption of the industry.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Sustainable development strategies should be promoted from both the bottom-up in terms of design and top-down in terms of structure. He emphasized the importance of Top-Down and Bottom-Up strategies in promoting sustainable development.</p>



<p>&#8220;Through Top-Down ESG strategies, clear energy usage standards and goals can be set, while Bottom-Up strategies allow society to start from the grassroots, focusing on practical implementation and improvement.&#8221;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Integration of the Semiconductor Supply Chain and International Cooperation</strong></h2>



<p>When discussing the integration of the semiconductor industry&#8217;s supply chain, Chairman Chen delved into the entire supply chain process from foundry to chip, then to the system, to the data center, and from the data center to the user. He believed that close collaboration and integration at each link are the cornerstones of driving the continuous development of the semiconductor industry.</p>



<p>&#8220;The semiconductor supply chain includes multiple links, each with its unique role and value. Efficient operation at each link, from providing raw materials to manufacturing and distribution of the final product, is crucial to ensuring the industry&#8217;s continuous development.&#8221;</p>



<p>Chairman Chen emphasized that international cooperation and resource sharing are crucial for promoting the sustainable development of the semiconductor industry and the efficient operation of the supply chain. He further explained that the semiconductor industry is a good example of horizontal division of labor, and cooperation models between countries are essential drivers of sustained industry development.</p>



<p>Through this exclusive interview with Chairman Chen, we gained in-depth insights into how the semiconductor industry addresses challenges in energy consumption and costs amidst rapid technological development and the demand for sustainable development. His perspectives provide valuable professional information, enabling a clearer understanding of the future direction of the semiconductor industry and potential solutions.</p>



<p>Dr. Wen Chen is the current Chairman of AP Memory and one of the founding members of the company. Leading AP Memory&#8217;s technical team, he has established numerous core technologies and designs. With profound expertise in semiconductor technology and industry management, Dr. Chen took over as CEO in May 2019, overseeing the company&#8217;s daily operations and leading it to higher operational levels.</p>

<p>&nbsp;&#8220;Taiwan, as the global capital of AI hardware, possesses a unique and robust supply chain integration capability,&#8221; mentioned Dr. Huang. He pointed out that Nvidia chose to collaborate with Taiwanese companies such as TSMC（Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd.）, Quanta, and Wistron due to this advantage. He firmly believes that no other country can challenge Taiwan&#8217;s leading position in this regard.</p>



<p>Dr. Huang further discussed the emerging direction in the AI field – portable AI chips. &#8220;While Nvidia&#8217;s AI chips have shown outstanding performance in data information AI, there is still significant room for development due to their high cost and limitations in AI functionality. Taiwan is actively developing and maintaining a leading position in this field,&#8221; he noted. He highlighted that portable AI chips can be applied in various areas, including IoT devices, edge computing, autonomous vehicles, smart manufacturing, where the demand for low-power and high-performance chips is increasing.</p>



<p>Regarding the development strategy of the semiconductor supply chain, Dr. Huang believes that the integration of memory chips and logic chips will become increasingly important.</p>



<p>&#8220;The rapid development of AI computing will drive the semiconductor industry towards heterogeneous integration and packaging, high bandwidth, and low power consumption. 3D IC packaging technology, System-on-Chip design, and Multi-Chip Modules will be crucial directions for the future semiconductor industry. Additionally, new-generation memory technologies such as DDR5 and GDDR6, along with new low-power semiconductor manufacturing technologies, will be key to the future development of AI hardware.&#8221;</p>



<p>In the face of global concerns about sustainable development, Dr. Huang stated that although Taiwan only provides suggestions as a participating organization in ESG matters, it is indeed a part of this field. He emphasized that substantial progress in this area requires innovative ideas.</p>



<p>Regarding Taiwan&#8217;s strategy of restructuring the global semiconductor supply chain and establishing foundries worldwide, Dr. Huang believes this is a necessary choice due to concerns about Taiwan&#8217;s geopolitical risks.</p>



<p>&#8220;Although the process might be challenging due to different regulations in different countries, Taiwan must adapt to local regulations and environments. However, it will ultimately succeed,&#8221; he said.</p>



<p>Dr. Huang also shared his thoughts on the potential future development between Taiwan and Europe: &#8220;Although Taiwan is just a small island, its influence in the semiconductor industry has been recognized by countries worldwide. With the intensifying political conflicts between China and Taiwan, global attention on Taiwan has correspondingly increased.&#8221;</p>



<p>&#8220;Regardless of who wins in Taiwan&#8217;s elections, Taiwan should continue to advance high technology and promote its development. Only when Taiwan can lead the high-tech industry will other countries pay attention to Taiwan.&#8221; Dr. Huang emphasized.</p>

<p>Chai emphasized the importance of raising NARLabs&#8217; profile through this exhibition.&nbsp; &#8220;Prior to this event, many people might not have been familiar with NARLabs. Hence, this exhibition provided an opportunity not only to showcase their research highlights in AI and chip manufacturing but also to increase their visibility.&#8221; He mentioned that although not all research highlights were exhibited, they hoped to attract more collaborative opportunities through promotional materials.</p>



<p>&#8220;On the topic of global collaboration, through collaborating with top universities, they could bring different research centers together and jointly advance their studies within the framework of the NARLabs.” Chai stressed the importance of physical exhibits in the showcase, noting that tangible exhibits during CogX days could capture more attention as they piqued curiosity and visually conveyed the intended message.</p>



<p>Regarding Taiwan&#8217;s vision for the UK and the world, Chai believed that earthquake-related topics were relatively novel for them due to fewer earthquakes in the UK.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“If they found these topics pertinent upon their return, they could proactively contact NARLabs and apply their services in the UK.”</p>



<p>When discussing ESG and SDGs, Chai emphasized the importance of disaster prevention. “Especially in the sustainable operation of semiconductor processing machines, preventing earthquake damage to chips and machines is crucial for reducing economic losses and environmental pollution.” The concept of &#8220;first-time-right&#8221; production he mentioned, ensuring the quality of each chip in the production process to maximize overall efficiency, served as an example of sustainable development.</p>



<p>Finally, Chai noted that Taiwan&#8217;s semiconductor industry, particularly TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd), had begun considering integrating advanced seismic technologies into new factories and processing equipment, hoping to reduce seismic damage.</p>

<p>Dr. Juin-Fu Chai, Deputy Director of NARLabs, currently holds a faculty position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Taiwan University and is a significant member of the National Center for Earthquake on Engineering Research. His research encompasses various areas, including basin effects, seismic wave scattering theory and experimental analysis, fault rupture mechanisms, near-fault seismic characteristics, and ground motion for seismic design. His expertise and research have a broad impact in earthquake engineering and related fields, and he actively participates in numerous domestic and international research projects and collaborations.</p>
