COP29 Presidency’s Ambitious Agenda on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance

To support a comprehensive approach, Azerbaijan has proposed 14 initiatives that span various aspects of climate and sustainability. These include connections between climate action and sustainable development goals, the establishment of green energy zones and corridors, innovations in energy storage, support for climate resilience, advancements in agriculture, clean hydrogen, methane reduction from organic waste, and green digital action. 

Among these, the COP29 Action Agenda introduces the Climate Finance Action Fund—an innovative climate finance source, to be funded voluntarily by fossil fuel-producing countries and corporations.

Building Peace Amidst Climate Challenges

Bayramov emphasised that COP29 offers a unique opportunity to bridge divides and contribute both to global peace and the climate agenda. Given the intensifying challenges posed by the global climate crisis, Azerbaijan has put forward the COP29 Truce Initiative, part of a Joint Solemn Appeal issued recently. This initiative encourages parties to set aside differences for the duration of COP29 to allow for collective progress on urgent climate goals. “Over a thousand NGOs, faith leaders, prominent figures, and numerous parties have already joined this Appeal. We call on all to put political divergences aside, stand united, and honour the Truce throughout COP29,” Bayramov urged.

Bayramov’s address highlighted Azerbaijan’s commitment to ambitious climate action, financial innovation, and promoting unity, emphasising that these initiatives will drive momentum toward a more sustainable and peaceful global future.

Her story has recently garnered attention from art circles and media worldwide, not only for her unique artistic style but also for the poignant, untold stories behind her bold use of color and emotionally charged creations. These stories, marked by life’s scars and challenges, have ultimately led to her transformation and rebirth. Those who know her deeply understand that Kate Huang’s narrative is not merely about “art” and “creation” but about “recovery” and “rebirth.”

“An accidental brain injury once challenged my ability to recognize faces and communicate, trapping me in a web of life lessons for many years. Not just my art, but even the act of ‘living’ became extremely difficult. However, I knew I had to persevere—my life and art, inseparable as they were, had to move forward together. In addition to medical rehabilitation, sheer determination to stand back up was my only path.”

Perhaps driven by an intense desire to create and an indomitable will, she persisted through layers of physical and mental pain, ultimately recovering enough to establish her own studio. She realized her dream of independent creation, leveraging her experience of battling and overcoming brain injury to refine the theme of “Mind-Heart Integration.” This concept merges psychological and neuroscientific knowledge with art and healing, earning her recognition and collaboration opportunities with various brands. Her recent work, “Dialogue Series—Winter,” reflecting this theme, secured fifth place at the prestigious American Art Awards. In an interview with 《The Icons》, she shared:

“Metal shines only after polishing. Through continuous effort and refinement, my art can shine brighter. This applies not only to art but to ‘life’ itself, which we should see as our ultimate masterpiece.” This belief has guided her through her artistic journey, leading her to continually forge ahead with the theme of “Mind-Heart Integration.”

“The artwork that is Kate Huang is still being crafted and refined. I hope my story inspires others, showing that regardless of life’s storms, if you are willing, the outcome will be beautiful. In the future, I aim to collaborate with more medical professionals and creators to promote ‘medical art,’ combining these energies to help more people.” Kate Huang, hailed by media around the world as the “Mind-Heart Integration Artist,” firmly stated.

Breaking Free from Conventional Constraints to Forge Her Own Path

Reflecting on her artistic development, Kate Huang graduated from Tainan University of Technology with a degree in Visual Communication Design and pursued an in-service program at Taipei National University of the Arts. She explored various forms of creation, receiving professional recognition through numerous awards. However, she gradually realized, “I must walk my own path.”

Before establishing her independent studio, she worked at a design company but found that the team workflow restricted her creativity. Desiring independent creation, she made a decisive move on a rainy night, opening her studio the very next day.

Although she anticipated smooth sailing after starting her studio, fate had more challenges in store. “After founding my studio, I enjoyed the freedom to explore artistic ideas and fully immerse myself in my passion for creation. My inspiration and invitations flowed endlessly. However, my good days didn’t last long; an accident severely injured my brain, bringing everything to a halt.”

Like a symphony interrupted by a rest, her creation ceased, and she lost her ability to care for herself. “The injury even affected my ability to recognize faces and communicate. I vividly remember friends visiting, admiring my work, and asking concerned questions. Despite my emotional turbulence, my neural pathways felt blocked, and I struggled to respond. That pain is unforgettable.”

Today, Kate Huang views the incident differently: “Those years with brain injury were a gift. During my gradual recovery, I felt new changes in my neurons daily, even if only a little. In these sensitive observations, new creative inspiration often arose. I experienced profound vulnerability and immense strength, providing nourishment for my artistic career.”

Now recognized as the “Mind-Heart Integration Artist,” Kate Huang continues her recovery, using art as her weapon against illness. “In art creation, I constantly break through myself. From this profound experience, I realized that without my battle against illness, I wouldn’t have my current artistic energy. And without art ingrained in my life’s DNA, I couldn’t have emerged from that physically and mentally tormenting valley.”

Brain Experiment Unveils Unique Artistic Path

In 2010, participating in a brain research experiment led Kate Huang to understand the importance of “Mind-Heart Integration.” She transformed these experiences and insights into creative inspiration, combining psychological and neuroscientific knowledge to develop her unique theme of “Mind-Heart Integration,” particularly embodied in her representative work “Mind-Heart Integration.”

This piece uses intricate lines and deep colors to vividly depict the interaction between the mind and the brain. The centerpiece is a brain surrounded by elements symbolizing the mind, represented as light and energy, indicating the mind’s influence and nourishment of the brain. The tree-root-like lines within the brain symbolize neural connections and the process of healing, showcasing the resilience and regenerative power of life.

Kate Huang explains that she often starts with mind maps during creation, organizing her thoughts and emotions before proceeding with her artwork: “Mind maps help me sort my thoughts, making my creation more structured and profound. Each painting is a dialogue between the mind and the brain, an exploration of life and self.”

She believes that when the “mind” and “brain” are not harmonious, there can be discord or delayed reactions. Thus, she advocates for calming down, listening to inner voices, reintegrating scattered thoughts, and achieving a state of “Mind-Heart Integration.” This synchronizes the conscious and subconscious, aligns the left and right brain, and builds a bridge for communicating with one’s inner self, clarifying distractions, desires, and illusions, returning to a pure state.

Kate Huang is convinced that this state of “Mind-Heart Integration” can bring inner balance and strength. Through her representative work “Mind-Heart Integration,” she hopes viewers recognize the importance of harmonious coexistence between the mind and the brain, inspiring them to explore and reflect on their inner selves.

Her talent caught the eye of design brand D.Vita, resulting in a collaboration to create the necklace “Art Wind” inspired by her artworks “Time 01: Past Memories” and “Awakening.” “Time 01: Past Memories” uses intricate lines and vibrant colors to express the pain and rebirth in life, symbolizing the process of stopping and reorienting life’s fragments to strengthen inner power. “Awakening” showcases the inspiration for self-healing when facing past traumas, encouraging viewers to focus on the beauty around them and pursue light and hope.

Additionally, she partnered with Sanye Tea Brand to launch a co-branded tea gift box. Her artwork “Pingtung Cocoa Fruit” was integrated into the tea packaging design, creating a unique art experience that enhances the tea product’s artistic value and demonstrates her innovative ability in cross-border collaborations.

Another representative work, “Time 03: Conflict,” was incorporated into the packaging design for Weien Coffee, turning each coffee package into an artwork. Consumers enjoy the charm of art while savoring coffee. Weien Coffee, known for its quality Arabica beans and unique roasting techniques, offers rich, layered flavors. “One important concept in UN SDG Goal 3 is that good health is fundamental to a quality life, encompassing both physical and mental health. My years of brain pain deeply taught me that physical and mental health are deeply interconnected. Therefore, within everyone’s capacity, I hope more people use their expertise to promote physical and mental health. For my part, I push the ‘Mind-Heart Integration’ theme, helping more people become aware of their mental and physical state, finding ways to adjust and embrace a better life.”

SDG Goal 4: “Quality Education” is also a deeply held belief of Kate Huang: “Art is a powerful tool that can change everything, including people’s thoughts, minds, and even souls if used correctly. Some artists dedicate their lives to creation; others are better at commercializing art. Now, my greatest wish is to use my artistic expertise from an educational perspective, letting more people understand the ‘Mind-Heart Integration’ concept, viewing art from different perspectives, and changing their mental and physical states through art appreciation or participation in creation.”

Understanding the importance of tools in achieving SDG Goal 4: “Quality Education,” Kate Huang delved into mind maps to assist her creations and help her students achieve more in their artistic journeys. “Mind maps help me calm down, sort out my emotions and thoughts, allowing me to delve deeper into different aspects of my inner world during ‘Mind-Heart Integration’ creation. Similarly, I use mind maps when teaching students to paint, helping them quickly enter their flow state and embark on their unique creative journeys.”

Beyond ARM: Comprehensive Development Opportunities in the UK’s Semiconductor Industry Chain

“When it comes to the association between the UK and the semiconductor industry, the first thing that comes to mind is the success story of ARM. Undoubtedly, ARM is indeed a shining jewel, but it is only a part of the entire industry chain,” Dr. James Yang pointed out. Many people’s understanding of IP might remain superficial. “IP (Intellectual Property) business is extremely important, yet it does not involve the physical operation of hardware and electrical signals. IP is like a programming language; you can use it to write a program to run a certain function. But this does not mean you know how to design a computer.”

Dr. James Yang believes that the UK needs to establish its own semiconductor industry ecosystem, rather than just relying on IP. “This requires comprehensive development from IC design to foundry services, and then to final manufacturing. The UK currently lacks large and well-known companies in the semiconductor design field. Of course, it does not have its own foundry either.”

In Dr. James Yang’s view, this is an opportunity for Taiwanese companies to enter the market and provide a one-stop service from IC design to final production.

Green Innovation: ESG and Energy-Saving Transformation in the Semiconductor Industry

Dr. James Yang further explained the topics of ESG and SCGS, stating, “ESG is a critical standard for measuring a company’s performance in sustainable development. SCGS, on the other hand, is the practical application of implementing ESG standards in supply chain management.” He indicated that their company has integrated such philosophies into the development of EDA (Electronic Design Automation) tools.

In further discussion on energy-saving issues, Dr. Yang particularly emphasized that while pursuing technological innovation, the semiconductor industry must consider energy saving as a crucial metric. This applies not only to product design and manufacturing processes but also extends to the entire product lifecycle. Taiwan’s pivotal role in the global semiconductor supply chain endows it with a unique responsibility to promote energy-saving technologies. Dr. Yang advocates for the use of innovative EDA to foresee and swiftly address future issues from the early stages of product design, thereby driving the entire industry towards a greener and more sustainable direction.

“Our company ( Arculus System Co., Ltd. )’s Green EDA tool is developed with this in mind. EDA tools are the core of IC design, determining design efficiency and the energy consumption of the final product. The design mindset of tools from the IDM (Integrated Device Manufacturer) era does not fit the current FABLESS (semiconductor companies without fabrication plants) model. Modern EDA tools should help clients foresee and solve potential energy consumption issues during the design phase.”

Dr. James Yang provided a customer case to illustrate how using their EDA tool not only improved performance from 1.3G to 3.5G but also significantly reduced R&D time. A task that once required a team of 7-8 people around 4-5 weeks to locate a problem, now can be solved by one person in a few hours, greatly saving the energy consumption that would have been used by several computers operating for a long time.

Sachs: Media Fostering Mutual Understanding on SDGs Among Global Regions

“The media can help the public to understand how we can move to a much better world that’s more fair, that’s more prosperous, and that is environmentally safe” Sachs stated. He emphasized that media not only connects emotions but also consolidates consensus, a crucial factor in advancing the common goals of SDGs.

Sachs also pointed out that as the primary source of information for society, media guides people from different regions and languages to understand each other, establishing a foundation for communication. Especially in the face of escalating global environmental challenges such as typhoons, heatwaves, and other worldwide issues, people from diverse regions need not only to understand each other but also have plenty to learn together.

“Media stands as the frontline communicator, not only providing information but also disseminating reactions and voices from various societal strata. Through close collaboration with experts in different fields, media serves as an interpreter on global issues, transforming diverse and intricate topics into clear narratives that can be shared with audiences worldwide. It ensures that these complex issues find their precise target audience.”

Sachs: Media Should Help Society Refocus on SDGs

“The urgency of extreme climate issues and other global concerns is paramount. In this critical moment, the media has a responsibility to assist the global populace in focusing on these long-term, pivotal issues, starting with the SDGs.”

Sachs advocates that as we enter the era of Web 3.0, which is currently being termed the Sustainable Year of 2023, the media industry should redefine its purpose. It should prioritize essential topics influencing societal development, transforming media into the guardian of societal conscience and promoting sustainability:

In an exclusive interview with “The Icons,” BenQ Taiwan General Manager, Steve Yang, stated, “BenQ is a people-centric brand. We aim to assist customers in green transition, minimizing waste at exhibitions and delivering positive social impact. We hope to spread the BenQ spirit of “bringing enjoyment n’ quality to life” far and wide.”

Following 100% environmental sustainability with the 3R principles! BenQ becomes the first and only global company to achieve ISO 20121 sustainable event management requirements in COMPUTEX.

During COMPUTEX TAIPEI, BenQ sprang its sustainability concept into action, creating a highly profiled green booth. The design of the booth not only met the three dimensions of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) but also complied with the requirements of the ISO 20121 sustainable event management system. Besides, all 15 ESG targets were achieved and verified by BSI assessment. Taiwan General Manager, Steve Yang mentioned in the interview with “The Icons,” “Our goal is to become the first and the only company in the world to obtain ISO 20121 since COMPUTEX’s inception in 1981. The company has been involved in smart solution development for ten years, generating revenue of over 60 billion TWD last year. In this exhibition, we provided more than 50% of ESG solutions and designed the booth abiding by the 3R principle, producing zero decoration waste. We endeavor to promote green practices alongside our customers.”

BenQ not only adhered to environmental sustainability principles in booth design but displayed indicators of the 3R approach (reduce, reuse, recycle), employing a clean, natural wood-tone aesthetic to present sustainability. Furthermore, they digitized over 90% of promotional materials, sourced 80% of building materials locally to reduce carbon emissions, and ensured 70% of gifts were manufactured in Taiwan. This act is to encourage exhibitors and partnering suppliers to embrace sustainability together.

“ESG should not be limited to the exhibition booth. We hope that everyone can follow and spread this spirit!”

Steve Yang also added, “Apart from showcasing smart solutions for green transition, paperless operations, and low-carbon practices at the event, we continue to initiate sustainable acts. BenQ collaborates with Teach For Taiwan, we built the ‘Pingtung Education Innovation Hub,’ and imported BenQ education interactive displays together. We hope that by using technology, teachers in remote areas can help children to explore knowledge, and ultimately, improve education in those regions. Our goal is to provide high-quality education and opportunities for self-development to children from all backgrounds. By understanding the primary needs of the education field, we wish to sow seeds of hope in remote areas of Taiwan, making positive changes throughout the country.”

Regarding waste reduction efforts at the exhibition, Steve Yang stated, “Taiwan produces an average of 417 kilograms of waste per person per year. However, the waste generated at a single international large-scale exhibition often starts from tens of metric tons. If businesses can proactively reduce waste at each exhibition, their influence will be much greater than individual efforts. This is why BenQ takes initiative action, implementing 100% 3R design at COMPUTEX, achieving zero waste in decoration, and using 100% reusable tableware and 90% digital promotional materials to minimize waste during the exhibition.”
