In the global push toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), achieving net zero is no longer just an environmental initiative—it has become a key strategy for shaping corporate competitiveness and global market positioning. As industries navigate the digital era, business leaders face the complex challenge of transitioning from traditional models to sustainable and digital transformation. From carbon footprint management in supply chains to internal energy optimization and advocacy for green fashion, net zero is not just a test of adaptability but an opportunity to create innovative business models.

In an exclusive interview with 《The Icons》, Kova Kao, Chairman of TRUEDAN, Andy Chen, Chief Strategy Officer of PROMATE Corp., and Ivan Wei, Chief Operating Officer of DAWUSHAN EGG FARM, shared insights on why the journey toward net zero is a long-term challenge but also a valuable opportunity. By leveraging digital technologies, fostering cross-industry collaborations, and staying committed to sustainability, businesses can drive growth while advancing societal and environmental progress.

As participants in the Taiwan Digital Enterprise Alliance (TDEA)’s Net Zero Academy, these leaders have successfully integrated TDEA’s resources and learning into their operations. Whether through precise carbon emissions management, supply chain integration, or industry-wide sustainable initiatives, their experiences serve as case studies for industries tackling net zero transformation. They also provided in-depth analysis of how digital transformation facilitates industrial change, highlighting the growing significance of green fashion and how net zero thinking can be embedded into corporate values to unlock new business opportunities.

TRUEDAN: Bridging Tradition and Sustainability Through Tea

As a market leader in Taiwan’s tea beverage industry, TRUEDAN faces not only fierce competition but also the challenge of integrating sustainability into its supply chain and operations. Chairman Kova Kao acknowledges that carbon emissions in the tea industry primarily stem from raw material sourcing, such as tea leaves and milk production, as well as energy consumption during processing and transportation:

“These factors place pressure on the environment, making it clear that net zero cannot be achieved by brands alone—it requires collaboration across the supply chain and support from the government.”

As a leading brand in Taiwan’s tea beverage industry, TRUEDAN faces not only intensifying market competition but also the challenging task of integrating sustainability into its supply chain and operations. (Photography: TRUEDAN)

Understanding that net zero transformation demands fundamental supply chain restructuring, TRUEDAN prioritizes partnerships with suppliers who adhere to sustainable production standards. The company ensures that every cup of tea—from sourcing to the final product—minimizes carbon emissions. Additionally, it actively promotes government-led initiatives, such as reducing plastic use and encouraging customers to bring reusable cups. “While these measures increase costs, they align with our brand values and raise consumer awareness of sustainability.”

Digital transformation has also been a breakthrough for TRUEDAN. Through TDEA’s Net Zero Academy, Kao gained insights into digital tools and industry best practices, leading to a significant upgrade in operational efficiency. “Participating in TDEA helped us realize that digitalization not only improves audit efficiency and data accuracy but also reduces paper waste.” The company has since implemented paperless auditing and digital management systems, greatly reducing its reliance on natural resources.

With TDEA’s support, Kao is more confident in TRUEDAN’s sustainability journey: “We aim to offer not just great tea but also make a tangible positive impact on society and the environment.” TRUEDAN’s approach showcases how sustainability can be integrated into the beverage industry and serves as a valuable reference for other companies.

PROMATE Corp.: Enabling Net Zero Innovation Through Technology

The electronics industry, known for its resource-intensive nature and high carbon emissions, faces the challenge of balancing product innovation with sustainability. Andy Chen, Chief Strategy Officer of PROMATE Corp., acknowledges that PROMATE SOLUTIONS, a subsidiary specializing in electronic manufacturing, operates with limited resources yet must navigate supply chain pressures:

“Many of our upstream suppliers are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that lack the resources and technical support to engage in carbon auditing or reduction initiatives.”

To address this challenge, Chen applied his learning from TDEA’s Net Zero Academy to develop a carbon auditing tool tailored for SMEs. This tool, first implemented internally, is now being extended to other industries. “Our goal is to provide an affordable and accessible solution, allowing more businesses to participate in sustainable transformation.” The tool not only streamlines carbon data collection and management but also integrates cloud-based analytics for real-time emissions monitoring and optimization.

The electronics industry is known for its high resource consumption and carbon emissions. Balancing product innovation with sustainability is a key challenge for PROMATE Corp. (Photography: PROMATE Corp.)

This innovation has led to cross-industry collaborations. Chen revealed that PROMATE Corp. has partnered with various industries, including DAWUSHAN EGG FARM, to introduce digital energy monitoring and carbon auditing solutions. “For instance, we helped DAWUSHAN EGG FARM implement smart meters for energy monitoring and used our carbon auditing tool to optimize energy efficiency in their production facilities.” These collaborations have expanded the application of PROMATE’s solutions while offering new insights into internal technological advancements.

DAWUSHAN EGG FARM: Redefining Sustainability in Livestock Farming

For the livestock industry, net zero transformation presents unique challenges. Ivan Wei, COO of DAWUSHAN EGG FARM, acknowledges the industry’s inherent limitations: “Our biggest challenge is how to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining animal health and production efficiency.” For example, essential feed ingredients such as corn and soybeans are sourced from the US and Europe, and long-distance transportation significantly contributes to carbon emissions—an issue beyond the control of local farms.

To address these challenges, DAWUSHAN EGG FARM has implemented a range of innovative measures. First, it has adopted recyclable packaging materials, replacing conventional plastic with FSC-certified eco-friendly alternatives. Second, it focuses on precision nutrition, optimizing feed formulas to ensure maximum output with minimal resource consumption. “This is a long-term process, but every small step helps reduce our carbon footprint.”

DAWUSHAN EGG FARM have introduced recyclable materials for packaging, replacing traditional plastic with FSC-certified eco-friendly alternatives. (Photography: DAWUSHAN EGG FARM)

Additionally, DAWUSHAN EGG FARM has embraced digital solutions to enhance energy management and production efficiency. By integrating smart meters, the company can monitor energy consumption in real time and identify inefficiencies. “With data-driven monitoring, we can optimize energy usage and minimize waste.” Moreover, the farm has collaborated with AI technology firms to enhance production forecasting, achieving 96% accuracy in supply planning—significantly improving resource allocation and sustainability.”Net zero is not just an environmental necessity; it is a key strategy for staying competitive.” Wei believes that through data-driven solutions and industry collaboration, DAWUSHAN EGG FARM is redefining the possibilities of sustainable livestock farming. He hopes that more industry players will join the net zero movement to drive Taiwan’s agricultural sector toward a more sustainable future.

Ivan Wei, Chief Operating Officer of DAWUSHAN EGG FARM.
Net Zero: A Path to Business Growth and Sustainability

Net zero has evolved from an environmental initiative into a driving force for global industry transformation and lifestyle innovation. On the path to a sustainable future, TDEA plays a crucial role in providing business leaders with opportunities for in-depth learning, cross-industry collaboration, and resource integration. Through its Net Zero Academy, entrepreneurs from various industries are pioneering innovative approaches to accelerate the transition toward net zero.

Kova Kao, Chairman of TRUEDAN, emphasizes that achieving net zero requires not only internal corporate reforms but also strong policy support. Government subsidies for eco-friendly packaging and plastic reduction initiatives could help businesses ease cost pressures while making net zero a more accessible goal for consumers. “Our aim is to ensure that every cup of tea embodies sustainability while encouraging more consumers to take part in this green revolution.” Kao believes net zero is not just an environmental commitment but a reflection of brand innovation and future competitiveness.

Andy Chen, Chief Strategy Officer of PROMATE Corp., approaches net zero transformation from within the company, integrating digital technology with sustainability reporting to attract young talent. He believes making sustainability engaging and meaningful is key to both internal cultural transformation and external market influence. “We want our employees to recognize the value of sustainability while using tangible results to convince more industries to join the net zero movement.” Through the cross-industry insights gained at TDEA, PROMATE Corp. successfully expanded its carbon auditing tool beyond the electronics sector, achieving a win-win for sustainability and business growth.

For Ivan Wei, COO of DAWUSHAN EGG FARM, education and advocacy are essential in advancing the net zero agenda. He notes that many SMEs still misunderstand ESG, but knowledge-sharing and cross-industry exchanges at TDEA are helping break down these barriers. By adopting smart meters and energy monitoring systems, DAWUSHAN EGG FARM has significantly reduced operational costs while making sustainability a practical reality. “Net zero transformation requires attention to every detail, and by leveraging innovation and data, we can drive industry progress while delivering long-term benefits to both consumers and the environment.”

Looking ahead, as net zero principles become deeply embedded in corporate operations and everyday life, TDEA will continue serving as a bridge between businesses, knowledge, technology, and real-world application. The three business leaders unanimously agree:

“Net zero is not just an environmental goal—it is an exceptional opportunity for companies to unlock new business prospects and enhance global competitiveness.”

With the support of TDEA, they are leading their industries into a new era where net zero is the foundation and sustainability is the future. They look forward to more businesses joining the movement to create a future that balances environmental responsibility with economic value.

In the Paris Agreement, developed countries committed to mobilising $100 billion annually by 2020 to support developing nations in addressing climate change. While this target was finally reached in 2022, it remains far short of what is required to meet the global climate financing needs. With the intensifying impacts of climate change, the financial demand continues to rise. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development estimates that by 2030, developing countries will require approximately $1.8 trillion annually in climate finance.

At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the international community will engage in negotiations on the new Collective Quantified Climate Finance Goal (NCQG). Special advisor on climate change Avinash Persaud pointed out, “Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) are key to breaking the deadlock and scaling up climate finance. Through their AAA credit ratings, they can effectively leverage capital and amplify the impact of climate funds.”

Expanding Climate Finance Through Multilateral Development Banks

Currently, MDBs account for around half of the existing $100 billion in climate finance, thanks to their ability to mobilise capital through leverage. Persaud explains, “MDB capital acts as loss-absorbing finance, enabling these institutions to raise funds at low costs from the market and support large-scale climate projects.” With a $20 billion annual contribution from developed-country shareholders, MDBs could mobilise up to $180 billion in long-term loans for developing nations each year. When combined with private-sector co-financing, the total could approach $300 billion annually.

This approach is particularly vital for climate-vulnerable countries. Persaud highlights, “By providing long-term, low-cost financing, MDBs can help the most climate-affected nations invest in resilience, reducing risks over time.” These funds are essential for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), which often face significant barriers to accessing adequate financing for climate action.

Addressing Adaptation and Loss & Damage Financing Challenges

“Currently, 75% of MDB climate financing is allocated to mitigation projects, with only 25% directed toward adaptation,” Persaud points out. He advocates for a clear financing target that ensures a 50:50 split between mitigation and adaptation, especially for climate-vulnerable countries. Such a shift would help close the substantial adaptation financing gap.

As for Loss and Damage financing, which requires grants rather than loans, Persaud notes that it lies beyond the current scope of MDBs. He suggests integrating innovative financial mechanisms, such as global tax justice initiatives or reallocating Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), to address this pressing need.

To achieve an ambitious NCQG, Persaud urges developed-country shareholders to take greater responsibility while ensuring that developing nations perceive the financing opportunities as fair and accessible. He believes the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) should send a strong signal through the NCQG to support MDB participation. This could include embedding long-term, low-cost financing mechanisms within the NCQG framework, allowing MDBs to fulfil their potential as a bridge to more sustainable and inclusive financing for developing countries.

“The success of COP29 depends on countries demonstrating genuine commitment. If they do, we can build a more effective climate finance system and elevate global climate action to new heights,” Persaud concludes.

As the urgency of climate change intensifies, faith communities are emerging as key players in driving global climate action. Niko Humalisto, an advocacy expert at the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission (Felm) and an international climate policy specialist, stands at the intersection of religion and climate justice. At COP29, his incisive observations and profound insights cast light on Finland’s conflicting domestic climate budget cuts and international commitments, while urging religious organisations to take on a more prominent role in climate action.

A respected scholar and an impassioned religious advocate, Humalisto’s work focuses on the fairness and transparency of climate finance allocation. He underscores how the moral imperatives of religion can inject fresh impetus into climate efforts. During various discussions at COP29, he not only critiqued the shortcomings of Finnish policies but also outlined a clear blueprint for how religious organisations can actively engage in climate solutions:

“Faith communities are not merely symbols of moral authority; they are catalysts for tangible action. They can direct climate finance to where it is most needed, ensuring that efforts yield real results. The synergy between religion and climate justice is a vital key to addressing the climate crisis.”

How Moral Power Drives Climate Action

Religion, as a historic moral compass for humanity, holds a unique position in inspiring global climate action. At COP29, Humalisto highlighted the transformative potential of religious communities: their ability to frame the climate crisis as a moral and spiritual challenge rather than merely a technical issue. This reframing instils a heightened sense of urgency and purpose among individuals and communities.

Humalisto emphasised that religious faith provides an active moral framework capable of transcending borders and cultures, uniting global societies in pursuit of shared goals. This framework not only inspires individual action but also mobilises entire communities to implement climate solutions. He pointed out that religious networks, with their deep grassroots reach, can swiftly channel policies and resources to those who need them most—achieving a level of depth and efficiency unmatched by other international organisations.

During the conference, Humalisto called for closer collaboration between governments and religious organisations. Religion, he argued, should not be a peripheral observer in climate action but rather a creative and integral force. He illustrated this point with case studies showing how faith communities in Africa and Asia have successfully tackled climate challenges through education and infrastructure development, significantly improving local livelihoods.

Transparency in Challenges: Addressing Inequality in Climate Financing

Beyond their moral influence, Humalisto highlighted the untapped potential of religious organisations in the allocation of climate finance. He criticised the management of climate funds by certain nations, pointing out a lack of transparency that often diverts resources to elites rather than those in genuine need. Religious organisations, he argued, are uniquely positioned to address these issues due to their extensive grassroots networks and high social credibility.

Humalisto directed sharp criticism at the Finnish government. While Finland has pledged to increase climate funding for impoverished nations on the international stage, it has simultaneously reduced its domestic contributions to the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Such double standards, he noted, tarnish Finland’s global reputation and undermine collective climate action.

He urged other countries to learn from the operational models of religious organisations, advocating for the direct allocation of funds to grassroots communities—particularly marginalised groups and women most affected by the climate crisis. He cited numerous success stories where faith-based groups have translated financial resources into meaningful, community-level impacts.

Integrating Climate Action with Core Values

Humalisto views the discussions at COP29 as merely the beginning of a larger movement to integrate religious values into systemic climate action. He proposed the establishment of a dedicated UN platform for religious and climate action cooperation, designed to foster joint efforts between religious organisations, governments, and NGOs.

The inclusion of religious organisations, he argued, is not optional but essential. In the face of escalating climate challenges, no avenue for uniting societal forces should be overlooked. He called on governments and international bodies to recognise the critical voice of religion and integrate it into the core framework of climate action.

Humalisto’s perspectives offer a fresh direction for climate initiatives, one that combines the moral power of religion with the extensive reach of grassroots networks to create inclusive and enduring solutions to the global climate crisis. His message is a stark reminder that addressing the climate emergency requires more than just technology and funding—it demands a shared foundation of human faith and values:

“In addressing the climate crisis, technology and funding are undoubtedly crucial. But only by combining them with the shared faith and values of humanity can we bring about true change. The moral force of religion is not merely an adjunct; it is the cornerstone of global climate action.”

The COP29 Climate Summit brought together leaders and experts from around the world, with Mwanahamisi Singano’s name gaining attention for her advocacy for gender justice and climate justice. As the Policy Director of the Women, Environment, and Development Organization (WEDO), she has played a key role in integrating gender equality into climate action. Mwanahamisi believes that gender equality is not a secondary issue in climate policy but a core element in addressing the climate crisis. She emphasizes that only by truly incorporating gender justice can climate action become equitable and sustainable.

Mwanahamisi’s work spans a wide range of areas, from advocating for land rights reform to supporting grassroots women-led initiatives, demonstrating her strong commitment to gender equality and social justice. During her speech at COP29’s Gender Day, she urged the international community to reassess the inequities in resource distribution and ensure that women’s voices and needs are central to climate policy:

“When women have the power to change, we not only change the climate but the future of the entire world. Their innovation, resilience, and leadership strengthen communities, make policies more equitable, and ensure that actions are truly implemented.”

Gender and Climate: Women as the Core Force

Mwanahamisi points out that the impact of climate change on women is particularly profound, especially in Africa and other developing countries, where women often bear the majority of the responsibilities for their families and communities, yet are overlooked in resource allocation and policy-making. For example, the lack of land rights prevents many women from accessing climate funding, which limits their ability to address climate challenges.

However, women are not just victims of the climate crisis; they are also creators of solutions. In fields such as agriculture and environmental conservation, women have shown extraordinary resilience and innovation. For instance, women farmers in Kenya have increased food production through regenerative agricultural techniques, while also addressing the challenges posed by extreme weather. In Tanzania, women-led community projects have established sustainable water resource management systems, significantly improving the quality of life for residents. Mwanahamisi believes that these success stories demonstrate that women’s voices should be central to global climate action.

Advancing Fair Climate Finance and Policy Reform

During the Gender Day discussions, Mwanahamisi emphasized that the equitable distribution of climate finance is key to achieving gender justice. She called on the international community to increase gender-specific climate funding, particularly for securing women’s land rights and supporting grassroots women-led projects. She pointed out that when funds are genuinely directed toward women-led sustainable initiatives, the climate actions within local communities will have a more lasting impact.

Furthermore, Mwanahamisi criticized certain market-driven climate policies, such as carbon trading, arguing that these policies overlook the needs of grassroots communities and may even exacerbate inequality. She suggested that climate finance should be distributed transparently and equitably, ensuring it improves the living conditions of women and marginalized groups, rather than becoming a tool for the benefit of a few elites.

Gender Justice: Leading a New Direction in Climate Action

One of the key outcomes of COP29 was the ten-year extension of the Gender and Climate Change Lima Work Program, marking an important step forward in integrating gender equality with climate action globally. Mwanahamisi was a key advocate for this plan, and she believes that this framework is not only a victory for women but also a significant milestone in advancing global climate action toward fairness and justice.

She urged the international community to redefine the role of women in climate action, viewing them as a core force rather than simply as beneficiaries. She stated that true climate justice must place the needs and contributions of women at the heart of action; otherwise, no policy will achieve its intended outcomes.

From Grassroots to Global: How Women Are Transforming Climate Action

Mwanahamisi has repeatedly emphasized the leadership role of women in grassroots communities, illustrating with vivid examples how, when women are given resources and power, they can drive innovative and sustainable climate solutions. For instance, women’s groups in Uganda have used solar technology to address energy shortages and have created more employment opportunities through small-scale businesses. In Nigeria, a women-led fisheries cooperative successfully restored climate-impacted aquatic ecosystems, bringing both economic and environmental benefits to local residents.

Mwanahamisi pointed out that these grassroots women’s successes are not just victories for individual communities but also microcosms of global climate action. She called on international policymakers to use these examples as references, incorporating them into the climate action framework and ensuring that women’s voices truly influence global decision-making:

“Women are not bystanders in the climate crisis; they are creators of solutions. The women from the grassroots are changing the world with their actions, and their voices should not only be heard but should become the core force driving global climate action.”

At the 29th United Nations Climate Summit (COP29), I suggest that leaders from various countries, including those from industry, government, and academia, should not merely be content with leaving “no trace” like a passing ship, but should strive to ensure that their presence leaves a lasting impact.

Amidst the raging global climate crisis, leaders standing on the COP29 stage are not just engaging in policy debates, but are also participating in a battle to shape their reputations. These speeches, statements, or commitments should not be just fleeting echoes within the conference hall, but should transform into a sustained wave of global public opinion and other long-lasting impacts. Whether political or economic, these costs only become meaningful if they create real change.

From the perspective of international media strategy, we have witnessed numerous leaders use events like COP to closely align their personal reputations with national interests. Through the media, they have been able to extend the brief spotlight into far-reaching international influence.

The Secret to Amplifying Your Voice from the Conference Hall to the World

COP29 is not just an international conference; it is also a business card for global leaders – a personal business card, a corporate business card, and potentially a business card representing a nation. In the global dialogues about the future of sustainability, the performance of leaders not only reflects their policy capabilities but also directly influences their international standing. Let’s look at a few examples: from von der Leyen’s moral call to Zayed’s technical narrative and Natano’s emotional resonance, each speech is a carefully crafted “reputation showcase.”

Ursula von der Leyen: Reshaping Leadership with Moral Language

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, with her impeccable storytelling skills, placed the European Green Deal at the forefront of global climate action. With the slogan “no one will be left behind,” she transcended the technical framework of climate discussions, elevating climate action to the level of fairness and justice. Through her refined language, her speech was quickly picked up by global media, turning into headline news and amplifying the EU’s voice to a global scale.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. (Photography: deutschland.de)

Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan: Rebranding the Middle East with a Technology-Driven Narrative

UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s speech focused on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), showing that the Middle East is not only an exporter of fossil fuels but also an innovative leader in the global energy transition. Through clear data and real-world examples, he reshaped the UAE’s global image, and the narrative successfully led the media to define the Middle East’s role as “a technology-driven force in climate action.”

UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. (Photography: U.S. Embassy & Consulate in the United Arab Emirates)

Kausea Natano: Using Emotion to Advocate for the Vulnerable, Elevating the Issue to Moral Heights

Tuvalu Prime Minister Kausea Natano, with his emotional narrative, brought global attention to climate justice. His speech not only highlighted the existential crisis faced by island nations but also proposed specific legal frameworks to protect climate-affected migrants and vulnerable groups. This powerful address sparked media coverage of “climate justice,” bringing the voice of the small nation of Tuvalu to the center of the international stage.

Tuvalu Prime Minister Kausea Natano. (Photography: bloomberg)

Mastering Key Moments in Media Narrative

In the media-driven era, reputation is no longer just a leader’s “soft power”; it is the core asset of influence. Every appearance by a leader at COP29 is not only an opportunity to showcase political vision but also a critical moment in shaping the media narrative.

The Global Narrative Framework as the Foundation for Success
Leaders must transform cold, hard policy data into emotional and compelling narratives that allow global audiences to understand the meaning behind the policies. For example, Natano’s “cry for survival” not only touched the attendees but also stirred global media sympathy and attention toward vulnerable nations.

Multi-Platform, Multi-Layered Media Strategy
Relying solely on live speeches is no longer enough to maintain visibility. Participants in international events need to use in-depth interviews, media communication, and news manipulation, combined with fragmented social media strategies and collaboration with other leaders to create more topics, ensuring their voices reach every corner and forming a cross-platform public opinion matrix.

The Combination of Transparency and Action
Speeches are just the starting point, not the endpoint. Leaders who can demonstrate transparency and action after the event, showing audiences the steps to come, will solidify their reputation and sustain media attention.

Creating a Voice That Won’t Be Forgotten at COP29

COP29 is a stage, but the real protagonists are those leaders whose voices endure. Participating in such a global conference should never be a mere formality; it is a process of reputation forging. From speeches at the venue to the media’s follow-up coverage, what leaders need is a comprehensive reputation management strategy that turns their commitments into lasting influence.

As an international media strategist and advocate for global issues, I firmly believe that climate action requires not just policy commitments, but narratives that can resonate and actions that continue to push forward. Therefore, I urge the leaders attending COP29 to ensure that their speeches are not merely a fleeting performance, like “a ship passing through the water without leaving a trace.”

Seize the opportunity, and make your voice the source of making the world a better place, leaving a key mark for yourself, for the related enterprises, for the country you represent, and even for history.

At the COP29 summit in Baku, Central America’s Anglican Archbishop and Chair of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Climate Justice and Sustainability Commission, Rev. Julio Murray Thompson, shared his insights on the unique role of the church in promoting fairness and effectiveness in climate action:

“Faith-based organisations are not just advocates; they should also serve as bridges between governments and the private sector to advance global climate solutions.”

This year, the WCC adopted the “Triple Treaty” strategy, integrating biodiversity, climate change, and desertification into a unified approach. Archbishop Murray highlighted the interconnectedness of these challenges, which are all exacerbated by human activity and lead to significant loss of life in various forms. “We are entrusted with the responsibility of caring for creation, yet our actions have often been more exploitative than protective, resulting in ecosystem degradation,” he noted. Murray emphasised the need to translate this realisation into concrete actions to halt the ongoing loss of life across land, air, and water.

Addressing Global Challenges with the Triple Treaty Approach，Driving Financial Commitments and Accountability

Since its establishment, the commission has pursued multiple initiatives, including advocating for life-centred economies and global tax justice. Murray cited a recent milestone: a webinar focused on “Climate Reparations Through Global Tax Justice,” which urged greater financial contributions from the private sector to address the climate crisis. He also mentioned the commission’s preparations to launch the “Decade of Ecumenical Action for Climate Justice” in 2025, aiming to rally global Christian communities to advance climate justice.

As COP29 is dubbed the “Climate Finance COP,” Murray underlined the critical importance of doubling financial commitments to ensure the survival of vulnerable nations. However, he expressed concern that current financing mechanisms remain inadequate. “This is not just about funding mitigation and adaptation; we must also address non-economic losses, such as the destruction of cultural heritage and the psychological toll of displacement,” he stressed. Faith-based organisations, he argued, have a vital role to play in pushing for innovative financing solutions and ensuring that funds directly benefit the communities most affected by the climate crisis.

Amplifying the Voices of the Most Vulnerable

“Businesses, as major contributors to carbon emissions, must be part of the solution. Faith-based organisations can facilitate dialogue between governments and the private sector, holding all stakeholders accountable,” Murray urged. He called on the church to act as a catalyst, helping to coordinate resources and develop actionable climate plans.

Murray also emphasised the importance of including those most affected by the climate crisis in decision-making processes. “The experiences and voices of these communities provide the moral clarity and practical solutions needed for effective climate action,” he said. Looking ahead to COP30 in Latin America, Murray expressed optimism about the region’s deep-rooted faith and culture of hope, which he believes can energise global climate efforts.

“Church communities must actively participate, sharing stories, offering solutions, and embodying a shared vision for a just and sustainable world. As we move forward, let us remain steadfast in our faith and commitment to hope,” he concluded.

COP29, currently being held in Azerbaijan, has captured global attention. As the founder of SmartNation, Shabnam Mammadova showcased her expertise in leveraging smart technologies to combat climate change at the summit. Her series of innovative solutions has become a driving force for fostering global cooperation and achieving carbon reduction goals.

The SmartNation platform focuses on the development and application of smart technologies. Through data-driven solutions and a technology-sharing platform, it enables nations to address the climate crisis collaboratively. Mammadova emphasised that smart technologies are crucial tools for breaking through traditional barriers to carbon reduction, particularly in precision data and efficient resource management:

“We are at a pivotal moment where technology and environmental protection intersect. Smart technologies are our hope for tackling the climate crisis. They empower us to act faster and more effectively, creating a truly global impact.”

Empowering Global Climate Action with Smart Technologies

Shabnam Mammadova repeatedly highlighted during the summit that smart technologies will form the cornerstone of future climate action. She demonstrated how artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and big data analytics can assist nations in achieving carbon emissions monitoring and energy optimisation. For instance, using data from intelligent climate monitoring systems, countries can promptly adjust their emission reduction strategies and effectively address sudden environmental challenges.

Additionally, Mammadova’s “Smart Green Cities” initiative has garnered support in several countries, becoming a highlight of the summit. This programme integrates smart transportation, clean energy technologies, and waste-to-resource solutions, not only helping cities achieve carbon neutrality but also improving residents’ quality of life. She believes these solutions go beyond carbon reduction, driving comprehensive and sustainable socio-economic development.

Promoting Technological Equity and International Collaboration

As an advocate for smart technologies, Mammadova pushed for several measures to promote technological equity during the summit. She proposed the establishment of a “Global Smart Climate Technology Sharing Platform” to encourage technology exchange and resource sharing, particularly to provide greater support for developing countries. She emphasised that smart technologies should not serve only a select few nations but should become tools for global collaboration in addressing climate challenges.

Under Mammadova’s leadership, COP29 facilitated multiple technological cooperation agreements. These agreements encompass areas such as smart energy management, intelligent agriculture, and climate data sharing, laying a solid foundation for global collaboration:

“Technological equity is key to achieving global climate goals. Only by narrowing technological gaps can we realise long-term carbon reduction objectives.”

Smart Policy Frameworks Supporting Long-Term Goals

Beyond technological innovation, Shabnam Mammadova actively participated in COP29’s policy-making process, promoting the deep integration of smart technologies and climate policies. Her proposed “Smart Energy Management Plan” became one of the summit’s core topics. The plan aims to maximise energy utilisation through smart grids and energy data management while reducing waste and carbon emissions.

Mammadova also advocated for establishing unified technical standards to ensure broader international adoption of smart technologies. She argued that only by synchronising technological and policy advancements can global climate actions achieve effectiveness and lasting impact. This viewpoint gained widespread support at the summit and has been incorporated into many countries’ future climate action plans.

During COP29, Shabnam Mammadova demonstrated her profound understanding of smart technologies and her unwavering commitment to global collaboration. Through the integration of innovative technologies and policies, she successfully advanced cooperation among nations, making smart technologies a crucial pillar of climate action. Her efforts not only made COP29 a significant milestone in the synergy between smart technologies and climate action but also injected fresh momentum into global climate initiatives.

Shabnam Mammadova’s leadership and vision will have a profound impact on future climate actions, laying a solid foundation for global sustainable development:

“Smart technologies are not merely tools for addressing the climate crisis but bridges that connect global actions. Our goal is to create a green, sustainable future, which is our responsibility to the next generation.”

At the COP29 summit in Baku, renowned economist and finance expert Vera Songwe shared her vision for climate finance and green industrialisation. Songwe emphasised the need for global collaboration to tackle the climate crisis and advance sustainable development. As co-chair of the International High-Level Expert Group (IHLEG), she underscored the importance of joint financing between public and private sectors, advocating for accelerated green industrialisation and strengthened domestic growth to address the demands of climate finance.

“Achieving global climate goals requires $2.4 trillion in financing annually, with $1 trillion from external sources and $1.4 trillion from domestic funding,” Songwe noted. She stressed that low-income countries must enhance domestic resource mobilisation, create jobs, and drive green industrialisation to boost their growth potential. Songwe called on leaders at COP29 to establish a clear blueprint for green industrialisation that benefits not only developed economies but also fosters inclusive economic growth globally. “This vision will serve as the foundation for global investment, attracting the necessary capital to make sustainable development a reality.”

Funding Loss and Damage, and Redistributing Fossil Fuel Subsidies

Songwe hopes that COP29 will fully support the Loss and Damage (L&D) Fund established at COP27 to assist countries most severely impacted by climate change. “Countries in the Global South often bear the brunt of the climate crisis, yet lack the resources to cope,” he stated. In 2022, global fossil fuel subsidies reached $7 trillion, and if half of this amount could be redirected into climate finance, it would greatly accelerate the green transformation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Such a financial redistribution would have significant implications for enhancing the resilience of vulnerable nations.

Songwe suggested that COP29 should establish a framework to reallocate some of these subsidies to Africa, Asia, and Latin America, supporting the green transformation of impoverished communities. These funds should not only be used for national policies but should also flow into rural and remote areas to meet grassroots needs:

“Through this financial support, COP29 has the potential to lay a more equitable and inclusive foundation for global climate action.”

Strengthening Carbon Markets and Establishing Unified Standards

The carbon market is a crucial source of funding for low-income countries to address climate change, but to realize its full potential, COP29 must play a key role. “The implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement is vital, as it can establish a unified framework for the global carbon market, ensuring that countries’ emission reduction actions adhere to consistent standards and reliable trading regulations.” She advocates for a shift from voluntary to mandatory carbon markets, establishing unified carbon reduction standards and regulatory mechanisms to reduce the risk of greenwashing and enhance the authenticity and credibility of carbon credits.

To achieve a global pricing standard for carbon credits and cross-regional interoperability, not only will it attract more investors, but it will also enhance market transparency and stability, creating a more reliable funding source for low-income countries. She calls on governments to demonstrate their commitment at COP29, jointly pledging to accelerate the development of carbon markets and support the participation of low-income countries:

“Through these efforts, the carbon market will become a critical financial channel to address the climate crisis, driving the global transition to a low-carbon and sustainable economy.”

Since joining the World Bank in 1992, Azerbaijan has benefited from various forms of support from the institution, including economic stabilization and the implementation of structural reforms. In recent years, the focus of their cooperation has been on economic diversification and providing high-quality public services. Regarding future cooperation, Stefanie Stallmeister, World Bank Country Manager for Azerbaijan, outlined the priority areas of collaboration for the period from 2024 to 2028.

Stallmeister pointed out that the World Bank is working with Azerbaijan to develop a new country partnership framework, which will cover the cooperation plans for the next five years. This plan is based on Azerbaijan’s national development strategy and takes into account current global challenges. The new strategy aims to strengthen resilience and sustainability, while improving productivity and creating more high-quality job opportunities. The plan covers multiple areas, including renewable energy, climate change mitigation and adaptation, strengthening employment services, and improving transportation and digital connectivity. The new strategy is expected to be finalized this fall, with more detailed plans to be provided at that time.

Supporting Transport and Energy Security Transformation

Since the 2000s, the World Bank has supported Azerbaijan’s transportation infrastructure development, investing in key highways and railways to improve the country’s regional connectivity. Recent studies indicate that the “Middle Corridor,” as a multimodal transport corridor linking the East and West, is expected to triple trade flows by 2030. To achieve this goal, further strengthening of infrastructure in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan is necessary, particularly in railways, ports, and logistics digitalization.

In terms of energy security, the World Bank is currently collaborating with Azerbaijan on the “Scaling Up Renewable Energy Project (AZURE),” which aims to enhance the country’s grid capacity and support the transmission of renewable energy. This initiative not only helps Azerbaijan achieve a low-carbon transformation but also provides new opportunities to reduce methane emissions and strengthen environmental protection.

Regarding COP29, to be held in Baku, the World Bank views it as a critical platform for advancing climate action and commends Azerbaijan’s leadership and commitment to climate change issues.
In the context of the Eurasian “Green Corridor” initiative, the World Bank is currently financing a feasibility study for the Georgian and Black Sea segments of this regional project. The Bank is also ready to support Azerbaijan and other regional countries in advancing this international collaborative effort.

Stallmeister emphasised that Azerbaijan needs to pursue a new growth model driven by a dynamic, non-energy private sector. In the future, Azerbaijan should focus more on human capital investment and adopt policies that support a thriving private economy. This approach aligns with the World Bank’s commitment to assisting Azerbaijan in successfully navigating this transition.
