This summer, Paris has become the focus of global attention, showcasing an Olympics filled with passion and vitality. This Olympics presents a new concept: sports and environmental protection can go hand in hand and support each other. It is an opportunity for the world to see how we can promote sustainable development through sports and protect our planet.

According to predictions, the carbon footprint of this year’s Paris Olympics will reach 1.58 million tons of CO2 equivalent. This figure is less than half of the average carbon footprint of 3.5 million tons of CO2 equivalent for recent Olympics. This achievement demonstrates Paris’s commitment and efforts towards environmental protection.

To create the greenest Olympics in history, the organizers have adopted many sustainable strategies and measures. They have implemented green reforms in transportation, food, and competition venues, and have made significant efforts to control carbon emissions. These efforts aim to achieve a more environmentally friendly and sustainable Olympics. Here are the sustainability highlights of this year’s Olympics.

Low-Carbon Transportation Planning and Implementation

For this Olympics, the official carefully planned the distribution of competition venues, with over 80% of the venues located within 10 kilometers of the athletes’ village. This planning not only facilitates the athletes’ travel but also effectively reduces transportation distances, further lowering carbon emissions.

Additionally, to further reduce the carbon footprint, shuttle transportation mainly uses electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and hydrogen-powered vehicles. The use of these vehicles not only reduces carbon emissions but also demonstrates the Olympics’ commitment to environmental protection and support for renewable energy.

At the same time, 400 kilometers of new bicycle lanes have been built locally to encourage people to travel by bicycle, further reducing carbon emissions. This not only provides a healthy way to travel but also adds a beautiful scenery line to the city.

These measures correspond to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11.2: “Affordable and sustainable transport systems.” This goal emphasizes the importance of establishing affordable and sustainable transport systems, and this Olympics is practicing this goal, contributing to global sustainable development.

The Goal of Using Renewable Energy in Full

In this Paris Olympics, all competition venues insist on using completely renewable energy. This is achieved through the joint power supply of six wind power stations and two solar power stations, providing the necessary energy for all Olympic activities. This practice not only reflects the commitment to environmental protection but also demonstrates the practical application and benefits of renewable energy.

For venues that cannot directly connect to wind or solar power stations, the organizing committee has chosen other sustainable energy solutions. These include using biofuels, hydrogen, or batteries to provide energy. These energy sources are environmentally friendly and can effectively reduce carbon emissions.

Medals Cast from Tower Scrap

The design of this year’s Olympic medals integrates sustainable practices with historical symbolism. This unique design concept not only reflects the commitment to environmental protection but also closely links the athletes’ glory with Paris’s history. Each medal’s front is inlaid with a uniquely shaped hexagonal iron piece, sourced from discarded iron materials from past repairs of the Eiffel Tower. This design not only incorporates the concept of recycling but also closely connects the history of the Eiffel Tower with the Olympic medals, making each medal rich in historical significance.

The process of making the award podium is also full of the pursuit of sustainability. The podium is made of French native poplar wood and 100% recycled plastic. This design not only shows support for local industries, but also embodies the persistence of environmental protection. Moreover, the entire production process is completed in France, which not only ensures the quality of the product, but also reduces carbon emissions during transportation.

The value of the gold medal at this year’s Paris Olympics is approximately $100 to $200 more expensive than previous years. (Photography: olympics.com)

About the Environmental Controversy of This Olympics

Although the sustainable development strategy of the Paris Olympics has been widely praised in many aspects, there are also some negative reports. First of all, the sponsor list of the Paris Olympics includes many fossil energy or industrial giants, such as Air France, EDF, Toyota, Air Liquide, and ArcelorMittal. These companies continue to emit a large amount of carbon, destroy the environment, and on the other hand, package their social responsibility through sports activities, trying to wash away their pollution responsibilities. This behavior is called “greenwashing”, which has aroused public doubts.

At the same time, Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, once questioned the Paris Olympic Committee, believing that TotalEnergies, a French oil company, should not become an Olympic sponsor. However, her efforts failed to successfully prevent Total from becoming a sponsor.

The sustainable development strategy of the Paris Olympics is an important milestone, showing how large-scale events can combine environmental protection and sustainable development. Although there are still many challenges and problems to be solved, we should affirm and learn from their efforts and innovations. We look forward to future Olympics and other large-scale events continuing this trend and incorporating the concept of sustainable development into their planning and implementation. Only in this way can we achieve true sustainable development and protect our planet, so that future generations can live in a healthy and prosperous environment. We look forward to seeing more innovations and efforts to achieve this goal. Let us work together to create a better future for our earth, our home.

Compound Semiconductors Drive Innovation in Electric Vehicles, Renewable Energy, and Power Electronics Applications

Jason Huang provided in-depth insights into the revolutionary contributions of compound semiconductor technology in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and related power electronics applications.

At the recent CogX Festival, he served as a keynote speaker and emphasized the critical role of materials such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) in the power systems of electric vehicles.

These materials, with their excellent heat management capabilities and energy efficiency, not only enhance the performance of power electronics but also contribute to energy savings and carbon reduction, accelerating carbon neutrality goals.

Huang pointed out that besides improving power electronics efficiency, compound semiconductor technologies also contribute to power density, increased product lifespan, reduced system component usage, and aid companies in achieving carbon footprint goals.

“Efficient energy conversion means less energy is wasted during the conversion process. Taking electric vehicles as an example, this not only reduces operating costs but also minimizes environmental pollution. These innovations are crucial for advancing electric vehicle technology and enhancing market competitiveness.”

Huang also highlighted the role of compound semiconductor technology in improving the overall lifecycle of electric vehicles. “Unlike traditional semiconductors that operate only at temperatures between 100 to 150 degrees Celsius, compound semiconductors can function at 250 degrees Celsius. This not only improves durability but also reduces long-term maintenance costs.” He believes that as these technologies continue to develop and apply, including innovations in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and related power electronics applications, they will become more reliable, more powerful, and more environmentally friendly.

Jason Huang pointed out that the next generation semiconductor technology not only improves durability but also reduces long-term maintenance costs.

New Regional Shifts in the Semiconductor Industry Due to Geopolitical Influences

Huang also discussed the impact of geopolitical influences and the semiconductor wars between countries, affecting the overall development of the renewable energy and electric vehicle industries, and influencing Sentec’s business expansion. In his view, localization is not only a necessary strategy but also a cross-border corporate responsibility. To promote deep integration into local markets, understanding local consumer needs and through the enthusiastic introduction by local governments to local industries, academic institutions, and research partners, it is possible to accelerate the implementation of local semiconductor strategies and promote green energy technologies to achieve carbon neutrality targets as quickly as possible.

“Through collaboration with local partners, Sentec can adapt to market changes more rapidly. This cooperation extends beyond product development to include market research, brand promotion, and sales strategies.”

Huang stated that Sentec aims to become a leader in the electric vehicle, renewable energy, and related power electronics innovation industries. “This requires a deep understanding of local culture, regulations, and market trends.” He also acknowledged the challenges brought about by globalization, especially under the trend of carbon neutrality, advocating for international cooperation and resource sharing to advance compound semiconductor technology for the prosperity of Taiwan on the global stage.

Through international collaboration, Sentec can bring the latest global technologies and strategies to local markets while showcasing local innovative ideas and products globally, creating a mutually beneficial situation. Huang believes that governments should play an active role in this process, attracting and motivating local enterprises to invest in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and related power electronics applications through friendly policies and tax incentives.

“This not only helps enhance the competitiveness of local industries but also accelerates the achievement of national environmental goals. In this context, Sentec seeks to establish partnerships with governments and other stakeholders to jointly promote green transformation and sustainable development.”

Advancing Industry Standardization

Currently, Huang is dedicated to assisting in industry standardization, including the Mobility In Harmony Open EV Consortium (MIH Consortium) and the Taiwan Advanced Automotive Technology Development Association (TADA).

Huang pointed out that the goal of industry standardization is the next-generation mobility solution. “Our current focus is on the next-generation mobility solution. The alliance’s most important task is to define key technologies, develop reference designs and standards, enabling all members to interoperate, reduce entry barriers, accelerate innovation, and shorten development cycles.”

The aim is to accelerate the electric vehicle development cycle from four years to two years and reduce development costs by one-third to one-half. The MIH Consortium’s public model includes three key elements: standardization, modularization, and platformization, significantly lowering the entry barriers for developing electric vehicles and creating an era where everyone has the opportunity to participate in the electric vehicle generation.

Regarding supply chain issues, Huang believes that government policies and tax incentives play a crucial role in promoting supply chain localization: “Through policy support and tax benefits, local production can enhance its competitiveness, which is particularly important for the localization development of the semiconductor industry.” He revealed that Sentec focuses on alliances with local partners as part of its global strategy, not only enhancing the efficiency of the industrial chain but also laying the foundation for Sentec’s expansion in the global market.

Finally, Huang also mentioned how Sentec, through participation in the TADA and the MIH Consortium, contributes to the establishment of electric vehicle technology standards. “Through standardization, Sentec can bring innovation and market vitality to the electric vehicle industry similar to what Android brought to the smartphone industry!”

Henry Fernandez, the Chairman and CEO of MSCI, recently shared his observations on the importance of the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region in global economic growth and its critical role in achieving global net-zero carbon emissions.

Sharing his insights on the transition to green energy for the APAC region, Fernandez claims that “”the Asia-Pacific region can play a significant role in promoting net-zero emission solutions.”

Asia-Pacific’s Growing Significance

Fernandez emphasizes the increasing importance of the Asia-Pacific region in the global economy during his travels. As the CEO of the leading financial service company, MSCI, he notes that Asia Pacific countries are vying to become the focal points for climate and sustainable development within the region.

Fernandez also found a willingness among corporate and government leaders to discuss investment solutions related to climate change and expedite the decarbonization process. Notably, the region is witnessing the emergence of new products, companies, and platforms supporting the transition to net-zero. In fact, many countries have committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 or 2060, including mainland China (by 2060), Japan (by 2050), and South Korea (by 2050).

Impact of Climate Change in Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region has faced unprecedented heatwaves and extreme weather events. Fernandez underscores concerning figures, citing UN data that reveals residents in the region are six times more likely to encounter natural disasters compared to those outside the region. He points to the economic and fiscal ramifications of climate change, highlighting potential losses surpassing $1.2 trillion in Asia by 2050, primarily attributed to flood-related disasters.

Referring to McKinsey Global Institute’s high-emission scenario model, Fernandez delves into the potential global stock losses triggered by flood disasters, emphasizing that Asia would bear the brunt with a share exceeding 75%. The Swiss Re Institute projects a 2.6℃ temperature increase by 2050, foreseeing a substantial 20% decline in Asia’s economic output, notably with Southeast Asia facing a staggering 29% reduction, surpassing losses in any other region worldwide.

Financial Solutions and Investment Tools

Fernandez recognizes the role of financial instruments and investment tools in facilitating the transition to net-zero. MSCI’s research suggests that 15 APAC markets, including Australia, China, India, Japan, and South Korea, can systematically phase out coal-fired power plants by 2050, reducing coal-related emissions by 39% to 95%.

As Fernandez attends the 28th annual United Nations Climate Conference of the Parties (COP) in Dubai, he “looks forward to the conference bringing meaningful outcomes for countries and businesses in the Asia-Pacific region.” The COP conference, to Fernandez, serves as a crucial platform for global leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions, negotiate agreements, and collectively address the pressing challenges posed by climate change.

Octopus Energy is a UK-based company specializing in sustainable energy. Committed to providing affordable renewable energy for all, it became the second-largest domestic energy supplier in the UK after acquiring Shell Energy Retail in 2023.

With service locations in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and the United States, Octopus Energy serves over 5 million homes and businesses. The PR Manager Sam Salehi stated in an interview with 《The Icons》 during the COP28, “To prevent climate disasters, we must change the energy system globally, moving towards net-zero to halt the increase in carbon emissions from human activities.”

To achieve this goal, Octopus Energy is the largest investor in solar farms in the UK. It also invests in wind power and anaerobic digesters. Additionally, the company encourages households to install smart meters to help them understand their energy usage and reduce consumption.

Furthermore, the automatic meter reading every half hour allows customers to access “dynamic pricing” for energy rates. Sam Salehi pointed out, “This enables them to use energy at a lower cost during ‘greener’ times, such as when there is abundant wind or sunshine, or during periods of low electricity demand in the early morning.”

Smart meters can help people reduce electricity consumption during peak hours to avoid the need to burn additional fossil fuels to meet demand, effectively reducing carbon emissions and electricity bills.

Sam Salehi emphasized, “We are driving systematic change, building a smart, sustainable, low-carbon energy system to end our dependence on fossil fuels and provide households with fair-priced green energy. Our ultimate goal is to propel global transformation by using 100% renewable energy.”

The current Ambassador-at-Large for Taiwan and Chairman of the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE), Dr. Eugene Chien, also known as the “Sustainability Father,” recently spoke in an interview with 《The Icons》, titled “Taiwan Ambassador Eugene Chien, Chairman of the TAISE: Asia-Pacific Experience is Making a Global Impact!” In the interview, he discussed his lifelong journey in sustainability advocacy, starting from his role as the first minister of environment. Since founding TAISE in 2007, Chairman Chien has tirelessly promoted cross-border sustainability efforts worldwide, evolving from a solitary endeavor to becoming a leader in Asia-Pacific sustainability initiatives.

This time, under his leadership, the Alliance for Sustainable Development of Taiwan (A·SDGs), with TAISE as the executing body, hosted the 6th Global Corporate Sustainability Forum (GCSF) themed “Accelerating Transition in Global Change.” The four-day event attracted over 7,000 participants from various sectors, including government, industry, and academia. During the forum, the Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA) ceremony recognized companies that exemplify sustainable development.

In a subsequent interview with 《The Icons,》 Chairman Chien emphasized, “The journey of TAISE hasn’t been without challenges. In the initial years, corporate interest in sustainability was lacking, but in recent years, sustainability has gained prominence. This year, we had a record-breaking 526 companies participating, showcasing a growing commitment to sustainability.”

The 6th GCSF attracted over 7,000 participants, photo by: TAISE

TAISE Sharpening the Sword for 16 Years

Since its establishment in 2007, TAISE has been devoted to sustainable advocacy. Just this past November, the organization celebrated its 16th anniversary. Chairman Chien, during the celebration, cut the birthday cake and made a wish for “national security, net-zero success, and sustainable development.”

Looking ahead to TAISE’s future, Chairman Chien aspires to “continue embracing its mission and leading Taiwan’s society towards sustainability.” He also announced that TAISE will continue to cultivate talent, deepen its professional services, and prioritize “digitalization” and “internationalization” as key directions in the next phase.

“The initial years of TAISE were challenging,” Chairman Chien reflected. In the early days of advocating sustainability to businesses, companies were more concerned about profitability. “I vividly remember that we were almost on the verge of shutting down. At that time, having just stepped down from the public sector, without official authority, I found it challenging to promote advocacy. But there’s a saying, “carrot and stick!” I didn’t have a stick, but I could use the carrot to pique everyone’s interest.”

To attract corporate participation, TAISE started organizing competitions. In the first year, only 16 companies participated. “However, these participating companies later provided very positive feedback, realizing that sustainable actions not only benefit society but also positively enhance a company’s competitiveness,” Chairman Chien recalled.

With the support of partners, TAISE’s development entered a prosperous phase. The TCSA is now in its 16th year, with a cumulative total of 731 companies participating over the years. This represents 80% of Taiwan’s listed company market value, making it the highest honor in sustainability awards in the Asia-Pacific region.

The TCSA have seen the participation of a total of 731 companies, constituting 80% of the market value of listed companies in Taiwan, photo by: TAISE

Cultivating Sustainable Education in Depth

With the United States proposing the Clean Competition Act (CCA) and the European Union experimenting with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), driving a global trend toward low-carbon transformation in supply chains, Chairman Chien emphasizes that business leaders should proactively understand and formulate medium to long-term plans to adapt to the future trend of net-zero. He believes that these changes will bring opportunities.

“This is the beginning of a major transformative era!” Chairman Chien believes that in the face of transformation, only a change in people’s mindset can achieve goals. “TAISE insists on starting from education, providing guidance, organizing competitions, advocating climate-related issues, and promoting sustainable development. At the same time, we host expos, forums, and workshops to assist industries, government, and academia in capacity building, tirelessly working towards these goals for the past 16 years.”

TAISE encourages stakeholders to sign the “Sustainable Development Advocacy Charter.” Since signing an agreement with National Taipei University in 2017, 58 universities have declared themselves as sustainable universities as of November this year. Following Shin Kong Wu Huo-Shih Memorial Hospita’s initiative in March, 44 hospitals have also committed to moving towards sustainable development.

Furthermore, TAISE actively promotes sustainable education, systematically imparting sustainable thinking and skills. The Corporate Perseverance Elite Training Course has trained 9,400 individuals. Professional certification courses such as “Corporate Sustainability Manager,” “Climate Change Adaptation Manager,” and “Sustainable Finance Manager” are among the most popular courses today

Eugene Chien: Digitization and Internationalization are Key Dual Tracks for Sustainable Education

This year’s TCSA focuses on the dual tracks of digitization and internationalization, featuring over 15 categories of awards that encompass enterprises, hospitals, financial institutions, government sectors, NGOs, and educational institutions at all levels.

Chairman Chien believes that the purpose of the awards is not just to rank organizations based on scores but rather to provide benchmarks and exemplary learning cases through outstanding organizations and individuals. The goal is to drive overall sustainability development in Taiwan.

Staying in sync with international standards, TAISE extends its awards globally through the GCSA. This year’s awardees include Indonesia’s largest petroleum company, PT Pegadaian, Asia Pulp & Paper Sinar Mas (APP), Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Société Générale, Nespresso Taiwan, and Volvo Group—globally renowned companies and industry leaders.

Currently, TAISE is actively exploring an ESG digital smart evaluation mechanism, forging connections with internationally recognized academic institutions to assist Taiwanese organizations in aligning with global standards. There are also plans to export experiences in sustainable talent training. In today’s world, the low-carbon transformation has become an undeniable global trend. Building on 16 years of sustainable advocacy in the Asia-Pacific region, TAISE is stepping onto the global stage to lead the journey toward sustainable development.

Led by a team from Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan’s first carbon-negative demonstration factory is making its way to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai this year. The factory focuses on phasing out underground fossil fuels/resources, converting surface-level CO2 into economically valuable green fuel energy and consumer chemicals/materials. It has become one of the highlights of the event.

Heading the initiative is Professor Chuh-Yung Chen, the convener of the carbon reduction/negativity sector in Taiwan Science and Technology Office for Net Zero Emission and a specially appointed professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at NCKU. In an interview with 《The Icons》 at COP28, Professor Chen expressed excitement, saying:

“Thanks to the Ministry of Education and President Shen of NCKU for allowing Taiwan’s research achievements to be presented at the United Nations. The artificial synthesis of green natural gas technology showcased at COP28 can convert hydrogen and CO2 into economically valuable ‘e-methane,’ ‘e-ethane,’ and ‘e-propane.’ This not only replaces traditional fossil fuels but also achieves carbon circular economy! Moreover, the global green hydrogen standard introduced the second generation ‘Green Hydrogen Standard 2.0’ at COP28, incorporating artificial synthesized natural gas into the global standard for green hydrogen derivatives. This is a joint commitment of the international community to the sustainable future of energy, highlighting the commercial application potential and international collaboration prospects of artificial synthesized green natural gas, accelerating the global low-carbon transformation of energy.”

In addition to e-methane, which provides a shortcut to carbon neutrality, Professor Chen highlighted the transformation of biogas into economically valuable green synthesis gas (CO+H2), another highlight of the event.

Turning CO2 into Resources

COP28, focusing on energy transition and the gradual elimination of fossil fuels, featured a speech from the NCKU team that immediately became a hotspot at the conference. NCKU, supported by the Ministry of Education’s “Regional Industry Talent and Technology Development Base Project” with NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen as the project leader, has pioneered the country’s first “Carbon Neutrality Technology and Talent Cultivation Base.” The NCKU team collaborated with the Taiwan Climate Partnership to hold the forum “Carbon Cycle Economy: The Green Revolution and Technological Innovation in the Global Petrochemical and Energy Industries” on December 8 at COP28.

Under the leadership of Professor Chuh-Yung Chen, the team, including Professor Cheng-Chien Wang, Dean of the College of Engineering at Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and ESG expert Dr. Wei-Hua Chien, focused on “Artificial Synthesis of Green Natural Gas” and “Reuse of Biogas,” convincing experts worldwide that CO2, once considered waste, can now be turned into a valuable resource. Professor Chen emphasized the need for international cooperation, saying, “This technology absolutely requires international collaboration to make a positive contribution to global climate change from a global perspective.”

E-Methane Provides a Carbon-Neutral Shortcut

Professor Chen recalled that Taiwan’s Vice President Ching-Te Lai expressed at the inauguration ceremony of Taiwan’s first carbon-negative demonstration factory that the transition to net-zero has become an established international game, and Taiwan cannot be absent. The NCKU team, representing Taiwan, has lived up to expectations.

“The past petroleum economy has gradually shifted toward a carbon circular economy. This time, we can feel that COP28 has made a clearer resolution about phasing out fossil fuels. The global demand for energy transition is growing. Against this backdrop, NCKU’s carbon-negative demonstration factory uses a core catalyst with low-temperature reaction (low energy consumption) and high selectivity to capture and convert CO2 into artificial synthesized green natural gas, which is an environmentally friendly synthetic ‘e-methane,’ as well as ‘e-ethane’ and ‘e-propane.’ This not only replaces traditional fossil fuels but also achieves a carbon circular economy,” Professor Chen said. E-methane can be used in existing natural gas supply facilities to achieve carbon neutrality and is already part of the green energy strategies for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 in regions such as the European Union and Japan.

Chuh-Yung Chen: Conversion of Biogas into Green Synthesis Gas with Economic Value (CO+H2)

Professor Chen pointed out that the difficulty in promoting carbon capture lies in the inability to establish a scaled carbon circular economy. If captured CO2 is treated as waste and buried underground, it is challenging to create additional economic benefits, and the cost becomes unrecoverable. This inevitably reduces the willingness of companies to invest. The carbon-negative demonstration factory showcased by NCKU can transform carbon pollutants (CO2/CO) into resources, demonstrating the potential for a carbon circular economy.

Cheng-Chien Wang: Out with the Old, In with the New, Establishing an Artificial Carbon Cycle

Regarding the net-zero carbon target for 2050, Professor Cheng-Chien Wang, Dean of the College of Engineering at Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, pointed out that although countries are actively developing low-carbon and decarbonization technologies to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, the new technologies have yet to replace high-carbon-emission equipment. Therefore, how to “capture” the currently continuously emitted CO2, quickly reduce carbon emissions, and even further transform CO2 into chemicals/materials or fuels to replace existing products derived from petrochemical raw materials is a direction that countries should actively consider.

“Our team has been involved in new types of carbon capture absorbents that can efficiently convert CO2 into pollution-free artificial shale gas technology. This system aligns with this year’s COP28 theme of ‘Eliminating Fossil Fuels.’ We have found alternative methods and procedures to replace fossil fuels, and we have even established a pilot plant, starting to collect engineering data for reference in subsequent development.”

Professor Wang hopes to find international partners at COP28, using global green hydrogen resources to transport Taiwan’s major carbon emitter, especially CO2 captured by Taiwan Power Company, abroad. After converting CO2 into e-methane, e-ethane, and e-propane, these products can be transported back to Taiwan, completely replacing the current demand for LNG domestically. This will achieve the complete self-production of Taiwan’s artificially synthesized green natural gas energy, significantly reducing the carbon emission coefficient of electricity. It will have a decisive impact on Taiwan’s high-energy-consuming industries such as semiconductors, steel, electronics, machine tools, and the petrochemical industry in achieving net-zero goals, contributing to the sustainable development of the world.

When it comes to globally acclaimed forums addressing sustainable issues, the Global Corporate Sustainability Forum (GCSF), organized by the Taiwan Alliance for Sustainable Development Goals (A·SDGs) and executed by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE), stands out as a representative event in Asia.

The 6th GCSF forum took place from November 14 to 17, 2023, at the Grand Hotel Taipei, focusing on “Accelerating Transition in Global Change.” The four-day event hosted 24 forums, facilitating cross-disciplinary and cross-industry dialogues. With over 7,000 participants from diverse sectors including industry, government, academia, and research, the forum aimed to collectively discuss strategies for accelerating global low-carbon transition.

The driving force behind these initiatives is Taiwan Ambassador Eugene Chien, Chairman of A·SDGs and TAISE. Apart from his role in leading these organizations, Ambassador Chien currently serves as Taiwan’s ambassador-at-large and has previously held key positions such as Minister of Transportation and Communications, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Environment. Many regard him as the “Father of Sustainability.”

In an interview with 《The Icons》, Ambassador Chien shared his journey of advocating for ESG and SDGs since the foundation of TAISE 16 years ago:

“With the rapid pace of technological advancement, international dynamics, and climate change, it is essential for everyone to take decisive actions, in addition to consolidating efforts from various stakeholders, to accelerate the realization of net-zero and other sustainability goals.”

From Obscurity to Leading Sustainability in the Asia-Pacific Region

In response to global trends, various countries have introduced regulations, including the European Union’s new policies and the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in October of this year. CBAM is set to impose carbon tariffs on goods imported into the EU, driving a global trend towards low-carbon transformation in supply chains. Taiwan has not lagged behind by passing the Climate Change Adaptation Act in early 2023 and establishing a carbon market in August, with carbon fees scheduled to be levied from 2024. In 2025, it plans to mandate listed companies to produce sustainability reports, making sustainability a prominent concern.

“At the beginning, it was indeed very challenging,” recalled Ambassador Chien about the early days of the foundation when sustainability issues were not receiving much attention. Despite the support from the Shin Kong Group’s fund and a few dedicated professors, the foundation faced the risk of discontinuation. Over the span of seven years, the foundation persevered through obstacles, especially when Taiwan showed limited interest in sustainability issues.

At that time, corporations were more focused on issues like earnings per share (EPS) and shareholder dividends. Ambassador Chien reminisced, “Initially, people were highly skeptical about investing in sustainability. However, as pioneers received positive feedback, those early corporate partners discovered that sustainable actions not only benefited society but also positively impacted their competitiveness.”

After a slow start, the foundation found its footing, and Ambassador Chien, with unwavering commitment, organized forums, workshops, courses, and various events, fostering collaboration across industries and sectors. Today, it has become a leader in advocating sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region.

“The Carrot Strategy” Captures Attention for Sustainable Development

Due to a lack of coercive power after leaving public service, advocating sustainability faced significant challenges. Businesses showed little interest and often couldn’t comprehend the immediate benefits of investing in sustainability. Nevertheless, Ambassador Chien remained steadfast: “There’s a saying, ‘carrot and stick.’ I didn’t have a stick, but I could use a carrot to spark interest.”

Following the “carrot strategy,” the foundation began organizing competitions to engage businesses. However, in the first year, only 16 companies participated, with five standing out and winning awards. Ambassador Chien vividly recalled the award ceremony, which featured Legislative Yuan President Wang Jin-pyng as a guest presenter. Despite the small venue and the presence of only about five people, the event left a lasting impression. Ambassador Chien admitted feeling somewhat disheartened at the time.

Today, with the impetus of international trends, sustainability has become a focal point, and the “Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards” (TCSA) is in its 16th year. The number of participating companies reached a record high at 526, with benchmark companies from various fields such as TSMC, E.SUN Financial, and Taiwan Mobile. The accumulated number of participating companies over the years has reached 731, accounting for 80% of Taiwan’s listed companies’ market value.

Ambassador Chien, akin to a preacher, firmly believes in the value of sustainable development and continuous advocacy. Today, sustainability has become a prominent and globally recognized issue.

In the current edition of the “Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards,” not only has the number of participating companies reached a new high, but leading companies in various fields, including TSMC, E.SUN Financial, and Taiwan Mobile, have also joined. The TCSA has become a prestigious representative of sustainability development awards in the Asia-Pacific region.

Ambassador Chien pointed out that global corporations such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, and department stores like Walmart are demanding that companies achieve low-carbon transformation and fully use renewable energy by 2030. This presents a significant challenge for businesses and has led to a phenomenon known as “carbon anxiety” in Taiwan. However, Ambassador Chien firmly believes that Taiwan has the potential to lead globally in the field of sustainability.

“This is the beginning of a major transformation era!” Ambassador Chien emphasized that economies worldwide have explicitly stated their goals to achieve net-zero by 2050. Business owners should proactively understand and formulate medium to long-term plans to address the future trend of net-zero. He believes that change will bring opportunities.

Since 2007, Ambassador Chien has tirelessly emphasized the importance of sustainable development, urging society to collectively address climate change and environmental issues, creating a sustainable future. Today, low-carbon transformation has become an undeniable global trend, and Ambassador Chien is optimistic that the green economy will lead the next 30 years. He looks forward to the Asia-Pacific region contributing globally, guiding the world towards a path of sustainable development.

In response to pressing global concerns for rising temperatures and sea levels, Topco Scientific Corporation, a key supplier in semiconductor materials with revenue surpassing NT$50 billion in 2022, takes a crucial step forward, pledging to lead in implementing ESG and SDGs values, driving a sustainable health industry.

Topco remains a decorated corporation despite heavy competition, including recognition as one of Taiwan’s Top 100 Sustainable Enterprise by CommonWealth Magazine, winning the Bronze Award in the APSAA Asia Pacific and Taiwan Sustainable Action Awards, and being listed among the Top 100 Sustainable Exemplars in the TCSA Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards.

Recently, Topco’s subsidiary ECO Technical Services Corporation received the 2023 National Excellent Construction Award for the Taitang Huwei Modernized Agriculture Circular Livestock Farm project. Another subsidiary, Anyong Freshmart, has garnered attention for introducing the market’s first “carbon-labeled fish essence product in Taiwan.”

“As global awareness for food safety and the environment rises,” Vice Chairman Lai Shang-Gui stated, “our subsidiary Anyong Freshmart is constructing the health industry with a technological mindset, incorporating healthy dietary concepts.”

Intelligent Pig Farms — Win Win Win for Livestock, Environment, and Energy

Visiting ECO Technical Services Corporation’s modernized circular livestock farm, one can witness a newly constructed enclosed negative-pressure water curtain production environment, effectively reducing the odor from pig farming. It also provides cooling and ventilation, enhancing the breeding and reproductive capabilities of pigs while increasing productivity and improving animal welfare.

This intelligent pig farm concept adopts a resource recycling approach, converting waste into renewable energy and reducing water consumption through automated water drinkers and rainwater purification, cutting water usage by two thirds. “The sludge and liquid waste generated by the pigs are recycled into biogas for electricity generation, reducing methane emissions and increasing green energy supply,” explained Lai Shang-Gui.

The green energy and water-saving designs annually reduce carbon emissions by 2,000 metric tons, equivalent to the carbon absorption of 130,000 trees in one year. With rooftop solar panels, the site generates an estimated 3.8 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity annually, enough to power 1,084 households for a year.

Fish-Energy Symbiosis — Revolutionizing the Industry towards Global Net Zero Carbon

To further promote green consumption among consumers, Lai Shang-Gui mentioned that their flagship product, “Anyong Fish Essence,” has undergone a carbon footprint assessment as Taiwan’s first fish essence product with a carbon label. The group commits to investing NT$3 to 6 billion annually to integrate solar power stations and environmental projects, aiming to rejuvenate the industry through “fish-energy symbiosis” and align with global net-zero carbon emissions.

“We collaborate with farmers and local fishermen to improve fishing yields using intelligent farming models, employing AIoT and big data,” said Lai Shang-Gui. Anyong Freshmart ensures quality control throughout the production, feed, and farming process, establishing a billion-dollar integrated supply chain. With semiconductor-grade equipment and technology, they safeguard food safety, care for the land, and achieve sustainability.

As a member of the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Topco Scientific Corporation commits to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) ISO14001 and ISO50001 environmental and energy management systems.

“Topco has long pioneered green energy technology development, excelling in liquid and solvent waste recycling, sludge transportation and management, and biogas power generation,” said Lai Shang-Gui.
