Amid the ongoing evolution of the global economic system, BRICS has become a vital symbol of the rise of emerging economies. Thailand’s application to join BRICS marks a significant step forward in its pursuit of economic diversification and strategic geopolitical positioning. Jack Huang, a consultant with the United Nations Information Technology Department and an internationally renowned expert in economic and geopolitical strategies, has served as an advisor to multiple governments and specializes in in-depth research on emerging markets. In an exclusive interview with《The Icons》, Huang remarked, “BRICS is reshaping the structure of global governance, and Thailand is wisely seizing this historic opportunity.”

Thailand’s strategic geographic location, coupled with its leadership within ASEAN, grants it unique value in fostering cooperation among emerging economies:

“Thailand’s membership will not only elevate its international influence but also position it as a bridge between BRICS and ASEAN. This role will deepen regional cooperation and attract more international capital and technology flows.”

Thailand’s Geopolitical Advantage: A Strategic Role in Regional Cooperation

Thailand’s geographic location has long established it as a pivotal nation in Asia. Situated at the heart of Southeast Asia, it is not only a crucial geopolitical hub but also a bridge connecting East Asia and South Asia. This geographic advantage has historically made Thailand a focal point for competing global powers. Remarkably, Thailand’s flexible diplomatic strategies have allowed it to maintain independence without ever being colonized—an exceptional achievement among Asian nations.

Jack Huang pointed out that during the Cold War, Thailand served as an important ally of the United States in Southeast Asia while maintaining certain cooperative ties with China. This tradition of balanced diplomacy continues to this day, securing Thailand a favorable position in regional and international geopolitics. “Thailand’s unique geographic advantages and diplomatic agility have made it a key player within ASEAN, allowing it to establish a foothold between Eastern and Western powers,” Jack emphasized in the interview.

Thailand’s export-driven economic model has fueled its rapid growth. In recent years, it has become a manufacturing hub in the region, attracting substantial foreign investment. In 2023, exports to China, Japan, and the United States accounted for the majority of Thailand’s total trade volume, with exports to China alone comprising approximately 20% of the total. However, its heavy reliance on a single market has exposed the resilience of Thailand’s economy to certain risks.

“Thailand must explore new opportunities beyond traditional markets to diversify risks and enhance national competitiveness,” Jack remarked.

Aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals: Thailand’s Strategic Positioning

Thailand’s green economic transition aligns closely with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 13 on Climate Action and Goal 7 on Affordable and Clean Energy. Jack highlighted Thailand’s active promotion of renewable energy infrastructure, such as solar and wind power, and the introduction of modern agricultural technologies to achieve sustainable production, contributing to Goal 2 on Food Security.

Thailand is also advancing water resource management and urban sustainability planning. By collaborating with BRICS, the country gains access to technical support and funding, gradually implementing a low-carbon economic blueprint. “In pursuing these SDGs, Thailand not only leverages its geographic advantages but also sets a successful example of transformation for the world,” Jack remarked. Through BRICS cooperation, Thailand has spearheaded renewable energy projects and enhanced regional agricultural resilience, contributing to global sustainability.

(Photography: The Icons)

Economic Diversification: Thailand’s Strategic Choice

Thailand’s formal application to join BRICS in 2024 quickly became a focal point of international discussion. Regarding this decision, Jack commented, “BRICS has become synonymous with emerging market economies, with a combined economic output surpassing the G7. Thailand’s move clearly reflects its desire for economic diversification and increased geopolitical influence.”

Through the BRICS platform, Thailand aims to deepen cooperation with other emerging economies, particularly in infrastructure, technology transfer, and trade finance. China’s Belt and Road Initiative offers a ready model for cooperation, with investments in Thailand’s high-speed rail, ports, and industrial parks laying the groundwork for BRICS membership.

Jack also highlighted the potential benefits from BRICS’ New Development Bank (NDB), which could provide funding for sustainable development projects and reduce reliance on Western financial systems. Diplomatically, Thailand continues to demonstrate its balancing act: “Thailand maintains close ties with traditional Western allies while also engaging with emerging powers in the East. This dual approach is key to its international standing.”

However, challenges remain, particularly in managing the potential impact on its military and economic relationships with the United States. Jack emphasized that this requires Thailand to exhibit a high degree of diplomatic flexibility and intelligence.

BRICS has become synonymous with emerging market economies, with its combined economic output surpassing that of the G7 nations.
Multilateral Collaboration: Synergies Between ASEAN and BRICS

Looking ahead, Huang expressed confidence in Thailand’s role within BRICS, envisioning the country as a bridge between BRICS and ASEAN to attract more capital and technology into Southeast Asia.

“BRICS represents the trend of a multipolar world. Thailand’s membership brings new opportunities not only for itself but also for the entire ASEAN region,” Huang stated. He also warned of challenges within BRICS, such as geopolitical tensions between China and India and the isolation of Russia due to sanctions, which could affect the organization’s cohesion.

In conclusion, Huang stressed that Thailand’s success depends on finding the optimal balance between traditional allies and emerging partners. This is both a challenge and an opportunity for Thailand to redefine its position in the new global economic order.

BRICS is no longer merely a concept of geoeconomics but a symbol of the shifting center of global economic gravity. At this pivotal moment, Thailand’s alignment with BRICS reflects its deep understanding of global trends and strategic foresight.

“Thailand’s decision is not only about economic growth but also about gaining a stronger voice in the global economic landscape. While challenges lie ahead, Thailand’s adaptability and resilience will pave the way for a more prosperous and sustainable future.”

In a recent exclusive interview with Reef AI Khajeh, the Marketing Director of the Emirates Red Crescent, 《The Icons》delved into the organization’s profound impact on global humanitarian efforts and its participation in COP28. Established in 1983 under the patronage of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Emirates Red Crescent has emerged as a beacon of hope, dedicated to alleviating suffering and fostering resilience in communities worldwide.

“The objective is clear: to provide swift emergency response and effectively coordinate relief efforts,” Khajeh emphasized.

One of the notable initiatives discussed during the interview was the collaboration with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent in “Operation Gallant Knight 2.” This joint endeavor aimed to provide moral and psychological support to individuals affected by the Syria-Turkey earthquake. Notably, in April 2023, members of the Red Crescent celebrated Eid Al Fitr with 150 children and cancer-stricken orphans in Syria’s Latakia governorate, exemplifying their commitment to holistic support.

Khajeh also shed light on the Emirates Red Crescent’s remarkable fundraising endeavors, having amassed over AED 10 billion (approximately $2.9 billion) in humanitarian funding over the past 15 years. With a reach spanning 128 countries, both within and beyond the UAE, more than 228 million individuals have benefited from their humanitarian initiatives.

“The objective is clear: to provide swift emergency response and effectively coordinate relief efforts,” Khajeh reiterated. The organization’s annual winter campaigns stand as a testament to its proactive approach in addressing critical needs. Through the “Be Their Warmth” operation launched in 2023, the Emirates Red Crescent provided essential healthcare, sustenance, and shelter to half a million people across 31 countries. Previous campaigns have proven impactful, with Jordan witnessing aid distribution to 120,000 individuals, ensuring a more bearable winter season.

The Emirates Red Crescent distribute food to Yemenis in Al Houta.
In response to the Syria-Turkey earthquake, the Emirates Red Crescent swiftly erected a shelter camp accommodating 300 individuals, equipped with vital provisions such as blankets, beds, and food packages. Concurrently, the construction of 1,000 solar-powered homes in Syria, costing $17.7 million, offered sanctuary to 6,000 displaced individuals, embodying the organization’s commitment to sustainable solutions.

Khajeh reiterated, “The objective is clear: to provide swift emergency response and effectively coordinate relief efforts.” The interview also highlighted the Emirates Red Crescent’s endeavors in Yemen, where mobile clinics have delivered vital healthcare services to remote communities. Since 2015, Yemen has received over $6.3 billion in aid, with close to 16,000 Yemenis benefiting from clinic services, underscoring the organization’s dedication to addressing long-standing humanitarian crises.

The Emirates Red Crescent continues to beef up efforts aimed at restoring normalcy and improving the lives of Yemenis affected by the country’s political unrest.
Moreover, the inauguration of the Umm Al Emarat Hospital for mothers and children in Comoros reflects the Emirates Red Crescent’s ongoing efforts to aid communities affected by natural disasters. Developed in collaboration with the UAE Embassy in Moroni, the hospital is poised to serve nearly 20,000 individuals, providing improved healthcare accessibility to those impacted by Cyclone Kenneth.

Khajeh also discussed the Emirates Red Crescent’s response to Pakistan’s 2022 floods, where aircraft dispatched with relief aid bolstered relief efforts. The “We Stand Together” initiative, launched in collaboration with various UAE humanitarian organizations, facilitated the distribution of emergency relief kits to affected women and children, emphasizing solidarity in times of crisis.

“In addition, the Emirates Red Crescent collaborated with several UAE humanitarian organizations to launch the ‘We Stand Together’ initiative, promoting the distribution of emergency relief kits to women and children affected by disasters, emphasizing unity in times of crisis. Furthermore, the Emirates Red Crescent participated in COP28 in Dubai at the end of last year, and they will also be participating in COP29 this year, continuing their efforts to address climate change and promote related humanitarian challenges.

In their endeavors, we see their unwavering dedication to serving humanity, transcending borders and barriers, offering hope to those in need. As they continue to tackle complex global issues, their steadfast commitment to humanitarian principles remains unwavering. 《The Icons》hopes that our interview report can shed light on their dedication and encourage more people to join in these meaningful global endeavors!”

In a previous interview “Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Chairman of SDSN: The Global Climate Crisis Cannot Be Postponed, It Calls for Global Action to Confront It Together” Jeffrey Sachs, President of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), emphasized the importance of international cooperation.

This time, he focused on the influence of media.

Sachs believes that media plays a crucial role in addressing the global climate crisis and promoting sustainable development goals, bearing the responsibility of helping society recognize vital issues and guiding the public toward solutions and action.

“I recently wrote an article titled ‘US Politics and the Paris Finance Summit’ where I mentioned sustainable development issues like tackling the global climate crisis and poverty. Many praised the ambitious goals, but in reality, very little money was invested. “there are too many summits and too few dollars!” Sachs chuckled.

Sachs: Media Fostering Mutual Understanding on SDGs Among Global Regions

“The media can help the public to understand how we can move to a much better world that’s more fair, that’s more prosperous, and that is environmentally safe” Sachs stated. He emphasized that media not only connects emotions but also consolidates consensus, a crucial factor in advancing the common goals of SDGs.

Sachs also pointed out that as the primary source of information for society, media guides people from different regions and languages to understand each other, establishing a foundation for communication. Especially in the face of escalating global environmental challenges such as typhoons, heatwaves, and other worldwide issues, people from diverse regions need not only to understand each other but also have plenty to learn together.

“Media stands as the frontline communicator, not only providing information but also disseminating reactions and voices from various societal strata. Through close collaboration with experts in different fields, media serves as an interpreter on global issues, transforming diverse and intricate topics into clear narratives that can be shared with audiences worldwide. It ensures that these complex issues find their precise target audience.”

Sachs: Media Should Help Society Refocus on SDGs

“The urgency of extreme climate issues and other global concerns is paramount. In this critical moment, the media has a responsibility to assist the global populace in focusing on these long-term, pivotal issues, starting with the SDGs.”

Sachs advocates that as we enter the era of Web 3.0, which is currently being termed the Sustainable Year of 2023, the media industry should redefine its purpose. It should prioritize essential topics influencing societal development, transforming media into the guardian of societal conscience and promoting sustainability:

“‘The Icons’ serves as an excellent paradigm, spotlighting exceptional global leaders. Your focus on themes related to ESG and SDGs in these leaders’ stories creates a positive global cycle, and I see you nurturing it.”

Sachs particularly emphasizes that global issues are interconnected, forming a complex web. Therefore, leaders must share a collective awareness of present and future challenges, believing in the shared fate of humanity. He states, “Media holds the key to amplifying voices, but what it amplifies should be positive, unifying voices that foster cohesion, not divisive ones. This is the role media should play in the sustainable era!”
