As global trade patterns shift, Azerbaijan’s strategic role in Eurasian trade is becoming increasingly apparent. Ahmed Abdoh Tarabeik, Central Asia and Caucasus Expert, expresses optimism about trade growth between Azerbaijan and the European Union over the next decade. He highlights that by developing the “Middle Corridor,” Azerbaijan can significantly enhance trade turnover with the EU. This article explores Tarabeik’s analysis from three perspectives: policy frameworks, infrastructure needs, and environmental impact.

“Azerbaijan’s geographic location gives it the potential to become a Eurasian trade hub. By advancing the ‘Middle Corridor,’ we can greatly increase trade flow between the region and the European Union.”

New Policy Framework: Key Focus Areas for the Next Five Years

The World Bank and Azerbaijan have jointly developed a five-year “Country Partnership Framework” aimed at promoting the country’s economic diversification and sustainable development. “This framework is an integrated strategy designed around Azerbaijan’s national development priorities and tailored to address global challenges.” Future collaboration will focus on strengthening renewable energy, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and enhancing digital and transport connectivity.

Within this context, Azerbaijan aims to transform itself into a vital trade corridor between Europe and Asia through the “Middle Corridor” initiative. This corridor traverses Central Asia, linking China and Europe, and creates trade-enhancing opportunities for Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan. According to World Bank models, by 2030, trade volume between Azerbaijan and the EU is projected to increase by 28% through this corridor.

Infrastructure Investment: Enhancing Transport and Logistics

“Improving infrastructure is key to achieving this goal, especially in railways, ports, and multimodal facilities.” Azerbaijan has made progress in enhancing its transport infrastructure, with the World Bank supporting multiple transport projects, including the Regional Connectivity Development Programme, which aims to link local markets and unlock potential in agriculture and services.

To fully leverage the Middle Corridor’s potential, Azerbaijan also needs to strengthen coordination with neighbouring countries to optimise logistics and digital processes, reducing transport times and enhancing trade efficiency:

“These improvements will not only contribute to regional trade growth but also help Azerbaijan secure its position within the global trade system.”

Green Transition and Environmental Commitment

While advancing economic development, Azerbaijan is also deeply committed to environmental protection. The World Bank is supporting the country through the AZURE (Scaling-up Renewable Energy) Project, which aims to strengthen Azerbaijan’s power grid and enhance its capacity to handle renewable energy outputs.

“In its pursuit of economic growth, Azerbaijan is equally dedicated to achieving its carbon reduction goals, contributing to both global and regional climate commitments.”

With COP29 taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan’s leadership in climate action will gain further international recognition. The World Bank plans to reaffirm its commitment to climate finance at the conference and will continue to provide technical and financial support to help Azerbaijan meet its greenhouse gas reduction targets by 2030.

New Opportunities for Connecting Global Trade

Against the backdrop of global supply chain transformation, Azerbaijan is rapidly becoming a crucial link in Eurasian trade. “By continuously enhancing its infrastructure and digital capabilities, Azerbaijan can further solidify its position as an international trade hub and attract greater international investment.” Through strengthened collaboration with the World Bank, Azerbaijan’s development of the Middle Corridor will not only boost regional trade growth but also support the diversification of the country’s economy.

Ahmed Abdoh Tarabeik’s analysis outlines Azerbaijan’s future potential and challenges in international trade. As the Middle Corridor initiative progresses, Azerbaijan’s role as a bridge across the Eurasian continent will grow, creating new opportunities for the local economy and positioning the country as a key force in promoting regional stability and prosperity.
