Ocean accounts for 70% of the earth. It is the origin of life and the guardian of nature. However, humans who pursue progress have polluted the ocean, global warming has heated up the sea, CO2 has acidified the ocean, and many marine organisms have been affected.

Anna von Rebay, CEO of Ocean Vision Legal, explained to the readers of《The Icons》 as an environmental lawyer that not only Life below Water, but also Life on Land will be seriously affected by the health of the ocean!

Without the ocean, we literally run out of air to breathe

“Do you know what will happen if the ocean acidifies?”

Anna indicated that the ocean absorbs CO2 through the “Biological Pump” and “Solubility Pump”, which are dependent on phytoplankton’s photosynthesis and sea-air circulation.

However, due to excessive emissions, CO2 dissolves in sea, resulting in increased acidity, which not only affects the survival of crustaceans, but also causes a large number of corals to die out.

So, what impact will ocean acidification have on humans?

“Half of the oxygen is produced by microorganisms in the sea. At the same time, seawater can absorb 25% of CO2. If the acidification of the ocean is more severe, it will absorb less amount of CO2, and the death of microorganisms will also lead to a decrease in oxygen. After that, there will be  no clean air to breathe.”

In Anna’s perspective, humans’ awareness of environmental protection is mainly on land, marine conservation is not taken seriously, which is the main reason why she founded Ocean Vision Legal.

“Law is powerful, environmental protection is important, but because the ocean is so vast, most people ignore that the health of the ocean is critical to the survival of mankind.”
