In the global push toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), achieving net zero is no longer just an environmental initiative—it has become a key strategy for shaping corporate competitiveness and global market positioning. As industries navigate the digital era, business leaders face the complex challenge of transitioning from traditional models to sustainable and digital transformation. From carbon footprint management in supply chains to internal energy optimization and advocacy for green fashion, net zero is not just a test of adaptability but an opportunity to create innovative business models.

In an exclusive interview with 《The Icons》, Kova Kao, Chairman of TRUEDAN, Andy Chen, Chief Strategy Officer of PROMATE Corp., and Ivan Wei, Chief Operating Officer of DAWUSHAN EGG FARM, shared insights on why the journey toward net zero is a long-term challenge but also a valuable opportunity. By leveraging digital technologies, fostering cross-industry collaborations, and staying committed to sustainability, businesses can drive growth while advancing societal and environmental progress.

As participants in the Taiwan Digital Enterprise Alliance (TDEA)’s Net Zero Academy, these leaders have successfully integrated TDEA’s resources and learning into their operations. Whether through precise carbon emissions management, supply chain integration, or industry-wide sustainable initiatives, their experiences serve as case studies for industries tackling net zero transformation. They also provided in-depth analysis of how digital transformation facilitates industrial change, highlighting the growing significance of green fashion and how net zero thinking can be embedded into corporate values to unlock new business opportunities.

TRUEDAN: Bridging Tradition and Sustainability Through Tea

As a market leader in Taiwan’s tea beverage industry, TRUEDAN faces not only fierce competition but also the challenge of integrating sustainability into its supply chain and operations. Chairman Kova Kao acknowledges that carbon emissions in the tea industry primarily stem from raw material sourcing, such as tea leaves and milk production, as well as energy consumption during processing and transportation:

“These factors place pressure on the environment, making it clear that net zero cannot be achieved by brands alone—it requires collaboration across the supply chain and support from the government.”

As a leading brand in Taiwan’s tea beverage industry, TRUEDAN faces not only intensifying market competition but also the challenging task of integrating sustainability into its supply chain and operations.

At the COP29 summit in Baku, Central America’s Anglican Archbishop and Chair of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Climate Justice and Sustainability Commission, Rev. Julio Murray Thompson, shared his insights on the unique role of the church in promoting fairness and effectiveness in climate action:

“Faith-based organisations are not just advocates; they should also serve as bridges between governments and the private sector to advance global climate solutions.”

This year, the WCC adopted the “Triple Treaty” strategy, integrating biodiversity, climate change, and desertification into a unified approach. Archbishop Murray highlighted the interconnectedness of these challenges, which are all exacerbated by human activity and lead to significant loss of life in various forms. “We are entrusted with the responsibility of caring for creation, yet our actions have often been more exploitative than protective, resulting in ecosystem degradation,” he noted. Murray emphasised the need to translate this realisation into concrete actions to halt the ongoing loss of life across land, air, and water.

Addressing Global Challenges with the Triple Treaty Approach，Driving Financial Commitments and Accountability

Since its establishment, the commission has pursued multiple initiatives, including advocating for life-centred economies and global tax justice. Murray cited a recent milestone: a webinar focused on “Climate Reparations Through Global Tax Justice,” which urged greater financial contributions from the private sector to address the climate crisis. He also mentioned the commission’s preparations to launch the “Decade of Ecumenical Action for Climate Justice” in 2025, aiming to rally global Christian communities to advance climate justice.

As COP29 is dubbed the “Climate Finance COP,” Murray underlined the critical importance of doubling financial commitments to ensure the survival of vulnerable nations. However, he expressed concern that current financing mechanisms remain inadequate. “This is not just about funding mitigation and adaptation; we must also address non-economic losses, such as the destruction of cultural heritage and the psychological toll of displacement,” he stressed. Faith-based organisations, he argued, have a vital role to play in pushing for innovative financing solutions and ensuring that funds directly benefit the communities most affected by the climate crisis.

Amplifying the Voices of the Most Vulnerable

“Businesses, as major contributors to carbon emissions, must be part of the solution. Faith-based organisations can facilitate dialogue between governments and the private sector, holding all stakeholders accountable,” Murray urged. He called on the church to act as a catalyst, helping to coordinate resources and develop actionable climate plans.

Murray also emphasised the importance of including those most affected by the climate crisis in decision-making processes. “The experiences and voices of these communities provide the moral clarity and practical solutions needed for effective climate action,” he said. Looking ahead to COP30 in Latin America, Murray expressed optimism about the region’s deep-rooted faith and culture of hope, which he believes can energise global climate efforts.

“Church communities must actively participate, sharing stories, offering solutions, and embodying a shared vision for a just and sustainable world. As we move forward, let us remain steadfast in our faith and commitment to hope,” he concluded.

At the COP29 summit in Baku, renowned economist and finance expert Vera Songwe shared her vision for climate finance and green industrialisation. Songwe emphasised the need for global collaboration to tackle the climate crisis and advance sustainable development. As co-chair of the International High-Level Expert Group (IHLEG), she underscored the importance of joint financing between public and private sectors, advocating for accelerated green industrialisation and strengthened domestic growth to address the demands of climate finance.

“Achieving global climate goals requires $2.4 trillion in financing annually, with $1 trillion from external sources and $1.4 trillion from domestic funding,” Songwe noted. She stressed that low-income countries must enhance domestic resource mobilisation, create jobs, and drive green industrialisation to boost their growth potential. Songwe called on leaders at COP29 to establish a clear blueprint for green industrialisation that benefits not only developed economies but also fosters inclusive economic growth globally. “This vision will serve as the foundation for global investment, attracting the necessary capital to make sustainable development a reality.”

Funding Loss and Damage, and Redistributing Fossil Fuel Subsidies

Songwe hopes that COP29 will fully support the Loss and Damage (L&D) Fund established at COP27 to assist countries most severely impacted by climate change. “Countries in the Global South often bear the brunt of the climate crisis, yet lack the resources to cope,” he stated. In 2022, global fossil fuel subsidies reached $7 trillion, and if half of this amount could be redirected into climate finance, it would greatly accelerate the green transformation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Such a financial redistribution would have significant implications for enhancing the resilience of vulnerable nations.

Songwe suggested that COP29 should establish a framework to reallocate some of these subsidies to Africa, Asia, and Latin America, supporting the green transformation of impoverished communities. These funds should not only be used for national policies but should also flow into rural and remote areas to meet grassroots needs:

“Through this financial support, COP29 has the potential to lay a more equitable and inclusive foundation for global climate action.”

Strengthening Carbon Markets and Establishing Unified Standards

The carbon market is a crucial source of funding for low-income countries to address climate change, but to realize its full potential, COP29 must play a key role. “The implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement is vital, as it can establish a unified framework for the global carbon market, ensuring that countries’ emission reduction actions adhere to consistent standards and reliable trading regulations.” She advocates for a shift from voluntary to mandatory carbon markets, establishing unified carbon reduction standards and regulatory mechanisms to reduce the risk of greenwashing and enhance the authenticity and credibility of carbon credits.

To achieve a global pricing standard for carbon credits and cross-regional interoperability, not only will it attract more investors, but it will also enhance market transparency and stability, creating a more reliable funding source for low-income countries. She calls on governments to demonstrate their commitment at COP29, jointly pledging to accelerate the development of carbon markets and support the participation of low-income countries:

“Through these efforts, the carbon market will become a critical financial channel to address the climate crisis, driving the global transition to a low-carbon and sustainable economy.”

“Pets, to me, are irreplaceable family members. I put care into every product because I want them to remain healthy and happy companions for as long as possible.” explains Albert Teng, founder of iPaw and SHINEON TRADING Co., Ltd. With this deep affection for pets, Teng launched iPaw, recognising that in today’s world, pets are no longer just companions—they are true members of the family.

“When you see your pet cuddling in the living room, on the sofa, or right by your side, it becomes clear that their happiness and health are closely tied to the quality of life for their owners,” says Teng. This passion for pets is infused into every iPaw product. With the launch of the brand’s gelato and yoghurt, Teng aims to relieve the stress that hot and humid climates bring to pets in subtropical regions. These nutritious frozen treats, enriched with fresh dried juice powder, whey protein, and easily digestible carbohydrates, not only keep pets cool but also promote their overall well-being by preventing weight gain and providing a refreshing, healthy option for them to enjoy.

In an interview with《The Icons》, Albert Teng stated, “Every time I see a pet joyfully consuming our products, I’m reminded of why I founded iPaw. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for pets, and our gelato and yoghurt are designed to not only keep them cool during hot weather but also to support their digestive health. This is something no other product on the market can offer.”

iPaw’s commitment to using human food standards in every product is not just a strategy but a core brand value. “We select human food standards ingredients not just to meet market demand but to ensure that pets receive the same level of health protection as humans,” Teng adds. This dedication to care has earned iPaw the trust of many pet owners, who have shared their positive experiences with iPaw’s products, helping the brand grow through word of mouth.

Under Teng’s leadership, iPaw continues to integrate sustainability into its operations. “We don’t just care about pets’ health—we also use recyclable packaging and work to reduce carbon emissions during production to lessen the environmental impact,” Teng explains. iPaw’s commitment to sustainability has garnered global support, aligning the brand with pet owners who value both quality and environmental responsibility.

Driving a Revolution in Pet Health Based on Care

“In my veterinary career, I’ve seen far too many pets suffering from illness. It made me start thinking—what if there was a way to prevent these diseases before they happened?” said Dr. Eva Sun, a veterinarian who has worked for several renowned pet food and pharmaceutical companies, promoting fresh pet food solutions. She explained her initial connection with the iPaw brand, “Modern pet owners should focus more on improving their pets’ daily health. Just like humans, pets need a ‘prevention over cure’ approach. By the time illness strikes, treatment is often too late.”

Transitioning from veterinary practice to the field of pet nutrition, Dr. Sun has spent over 20 years ensuring the well-being of pets. Her mission is not only to provide comprehensive care for every pet but also to fill their lives with love and attention. “My goal is for every pet to enjoy a healthy and happy life, not just receive treatment when they fall ill. I believe iPaw’s vision for pet owners aligns perfectly with my professional philosophy,” she added.

Healthy diets play a crucial role in a pet’s long-term well-being, and Dr. Sun fully supports iPaw’s commitment to natural and safe ingredients. “iPaw offers a variety of choices that bring both health and vitality to pets, which is precisely what every modern pet owner strives for,” she explained.

Albert Teng and Eva Sun share a similar vision for pets, advocating for innovation and care to ensure that pets around the world enjoy healthier, happier lives. As a pet nutrition expert, Dr. Sun is confident in the market potential of iPaw’s products, saying, “These innovative products not only offer a breakthrough in taste but also raise the bar in nutrition, meeting the high standards that modern pet owners have for their pets’ health.” Albert Teng, too, firmly believes that:

“Only brands that truly care about pet health will thrive in the future market. iPaw’s dedication to health and continuous innovation will elevate the pet food industry to new heights, bringing health and happiness to more pets and their owners.”

Dr. Eva Sun, who transitioned from veterinary practice to the field of pet nutrition, collaborates with iPaw to drive innovation and care, ensuring that pets enjoy healthier and happier lives. (Image: SHINEON TRADING Co., Ltd.)

Advancing the UN’s SDG: A Three-Win Approach to Health, Economy, and Innovation

Albert Teng has made care and compassion the foundation of his work, actively supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on health, economic growth, and innovation. “Through each iPaw product, we aim to harness the power of businesses and brands to positively influence society and even guide the environment in the right direction,” he said. iPaw engages in corporate governance and research, aligning with SDG Goals 3, 9, and 12, contributing to the well-being of pets and the world alike.

“The third SDG goal is ‘Good Health and Well-being’,” explained Albert Teng. “From a pet care perspective, pets are like family members. Their health and daily lives need to be filled with the same warmth and care as any loved one.” Albert has always prioritised the health of pets, and with this deep commitment in mind, iPaw has launched gelato and yoghurt products free from artificial flavours and colours. These products not only improve the quality of pets’ lives, but the yoghurt also offers probiotics and other nutrients that help boost their immune systems.

Additionally, Albert Teng continuously drives innovation in product design and packaging. “We not only use natural ingredients in our food, avoiding artificial flavours and colours, but we have also introduced new eco-friendly technologies. This not only enhances sustainability but also reduces harm to the planet,” he noted. Albert also called for reflection, urging businesses to contribute to global environmental protection while pursuing growth: “At iPaw, we incorporate sustainable development principles into every aspect of our products.” This approach reflects SDG Goal 9: “Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth.”

In promoting economic growth, SDG Goal 12, “Responsible Consumption and Production,” is embedded in iPaw’s processes. They’ve integrated freeze-dried fruit powders into the production of pet food, including Italian-style ice cream and yoghurt. These innovative methods maximise the value of natural fruits:

“We collaborate with like-minded suppliers, ensuring that from raw materials to production, our approach is rooted in care for pets. This is not only the core spirit of iPaw but also the important message we want to share with the world.

Albert Teng, Driven by the Mission of Promoting Pet Health and Well-being, Actively Supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Creating a Better Future for Both Pets and the Environment.
A New Era of Pet Health: Blending Care and Sustainability

iPaw has always made environmental sustainability and responsible development its core brand values, ensuring that every aspect of product design and packaging is mindful of its impact on the planet. As Albert Teng explained, “Our focus is not only on the health of pets but also on ensuring that our products are responsible towards the world.” Under his leadership, iPaw’s gelato and yoghurt products reflect the brand’s innovative spirit and unwavering commitment to quality. “From ingredient selection to the production process, iPaw takes every step with the utmost care, meticulously designing and testing each detail. This is what sets us apart from other brands,” Albert Teng noted. His dedication has helped iPaw build a strong reputation among consumers, positioning the brand as a leader in the pet industry.

When it comes to material selection, Albert Teng adheres to the principle that “less is more.” He firmly believes that “excessive additives can pose potential risks to pet health, which is why we choose natural, high-quality ingredients to ensure our products are free from harmful substances. For the health of pets, we believe every effort is worthwhile.” As pet owners become increasingly focused on the health and happiness of their pets, iPaw continues to provide high-quality, natural products that are free from additives and meet environmental standards:

“We aim to improve the quality of life for every pet by combining scientific nutritional knowledge with carefully designed products. iPaw not only promotes a new approach to pet health and lifestyle but also advocates placing ‘care’ as the top priority, ensuring that the lives of pets and their owners are filled with warmth.”

The Global Baku Summit of Religious Leaders gathered under the theme “World Religions for a Green Planet” as part of COP29, presenting a powerful moment for faith communities worldwide to champion environmental sustainability. Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, addressed the assembly with a call to action, underscoring the urgency of a united response to global crises.

“The world is currently facing colossal catastrophes. Our religious beliefs are of great power. We do not believe in relativity and individuality. Our actions should be based on building our future,” Cardinal Gugerotti said, speaking to representatives of diverse religions and organizations. As faith leaders converged on this shared vision, they explored ways to channel the moral and ethical strengths of their communities towards climate resilience and environmental stewardship.

Faith’s Power: A Unified Stand Against Climate Crisis

Highlighting the event’s importance, Cardinal Gugerotti commended the commitment of religious figures and institutions worldwide to safeguarding the planet. “This event is focused on protecting our planet,” he said. Such sentiments reflect a growing recognition among faith communities that environmental action is not merely a social or economic issue, but a moral imperative. By using religious influence to inspire millions of adherents, these leaders are determined to push for sustainable practices that honor both creation and humanity.

The summit provided a platform to reaffirm shared values while discussing collaborative strategies to address urgent environmental issues. With climate change affecting vulnerable populations disproportionately, religious leaders emphasized their role in advocating for ethical and compassionate responses to these challenges. They acknowledged the potential for collective action to drive meaningful change, leveraging the reach of faith institutions to engage communities in climate-conscious living.

An Ethical Obligation: Protecting the Planet Can’t Wait

Cardinal Gugerotti elaborated on the spiritual dimension of environmental preservation, calling on humanity to honor its relationship with the earth. “A person should live a decent life. The individual is the fruit of love of the earth. The individual is not a combination of simple chemical elements, but an embodiment of love,” he stated, emphasizing that each person’s existence is intertwined with the planet’s health. He warned of the impending dangers of inaction, reminding the audience that humanity’s future hinges on a shared commitment to honoring these values.

“We cannot afford to wait, the danger is approaching. What happens to us depends on how we honor our collective commitments. We must protect our humanity, otherwise wars will escalate, driving us towards destruction,” Cardinal Gugerotti added. His words underscore the belief that environmental sustainability is intrinsically linked to social harmony and global peace. In an era marked by geopolitical tensions and resource scarcity, he argued, failure to safeguard the planet could accelerate conflict, making collaboration across religious and cultural boundaries more essential than ever.

Throughout the summit, faith leaders discussed practical measures to encourage sustainable lifestyles among their followers. Initiatives included promoting renewable energy, reducing waste, and supporting local environmental projects. They emphasized the importance of integrating ecological consciousness into religious teachings and practices, recognising that faith can provide a profound motivation for environmental responsibility.

In an inspiring demonstration of unity, leaders from various faiths pledged to strengthen their advocacy for sustainable policies at both local and international levels. Recognising the potential to influence policy by engaging their communities, they committed to championing climate action as a spiritual and moral obligation.

Bridging Faith and Action

As the summit concluded, participants echoed the sentiment that religious and cultural diversity can be a source of strength in addressing global issues. While religious traditions may differ, they share a common reverence for creation, which can be harnessed to inspire and mobilize collective action. The leaders agreed to continue collaborating, setting aside doctrinal differences to focus on the shared goal of environmental preservation.

Cardinal Gugerotti’s message resonated with attendees, encapsulating the summit’s mission: “Let us build our future by protecting our planet. Together, we have the power to make a difference.” His call to action reflects the belief that humanity’s spiritual heritage holds the key to a sustainable future. As COP29 progresses, the impact of the Global Baku Summit of Religious Leaders serves as a reminder of the role faith can play in fostering a collective responsibility for the earth.

By the end of the summit, faith leaders had not only voiced their commitment to sustainability but had also laid the groundwork for continued dialogue and action. The event demonstrated how religious institutions can bridge gaps across cultures, using their influence to advocate for a green planet. Their unity sends a powerful message: the protection of the earth transcends religious boundaries, and through cooperation, a more sustainable and peaceful world is possible.

In 2023, a year marked by global economic uncertainty, the world continues to face challenges such as the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and climate change. For financial leaders, this is a time that demands courage and action. Julien Gattoni, CFO of the World Economic Forum, believes that in order to achieve the net-zero emissions target by 2030, the private sector—especially Chief Financial Officers (CFOs)—must play a crucial role in this transformation:

“We need to translate a company’s sustainability goals from high-level objectives into concrete financial actions.”

Acknowledging Knowledge Gaps and Seeking External Expertise

Gattoni believes that, in the face of climate change challenges, acknowledging our knowledge gaps and actively seeking external expertise is key. “Financial leaders should ask questions, as this can initiate a process of knowledge influx and foster the generation of substantial impact.” Many CFOs have already begun to consider how to incorporate carbon credits into corporate strategies and explore more effective ways to reduce emissions. He emphasized that CFOs also need to focus on the value of biodiversity and human capital, which are essential factors that cannot be overlooked in a company’s journey toward sustainability.

Under the pressure of climate action, CFOs can no longer simply follow a “less commitment, more delivery” approach to ensure stable financial performance. Gattoni pointed out, “Now, we must be willing to take risks, even if the outcomes may not meet expectations.” As the impacts of climate change intensify, businesses that fail to take proactive measures may face even higher risks. He encourages CFOs to create an environment that allows for experimentation and learning from mistakes, as this will lead to greater success in the pursuit of a sustainable future.

Enhancing Transparency and Accountability Mechanisms

Financial reporting has always been one of the core responsibilities of the CFO, and Gattoni believes that the scope of reporting now needs to expand to include metrics for all stakeholders. “We need to ensure that businesses are accountable for their sustainability commitments and publicly disclose them.” The Measuring Stakeholder Capitalism report, launched by the World Economic Forum in 2020, provided businesses with a set of standards to track their contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). He noted that over 121 companies have already integrated these metrics into their mainstream reporting and encouraged more businesses to continue exploring more detailed ways to measure their impact.

Pursuing a Just Transition and Supporting Vulnerable Regions

Gattoni emphasized that the net-zero transformation must take fairness into account, especially for developing countries that have a small climate responsibility but are significantly impacted. He pointed out, “We must ensure that these countries have the necessary resources to participate in the net-zero transformation.” He suggested that CFOs should consider the needs of different regions when measuring success, ensuring that the distribution of resources aligns with social equity principles, particularly when it comes to small and medium-sized enterprises and vulnerable groups.

Gattoni believes that real impact requires a coordinated shift in the market, which must be achieved through collective efforts from the private sector. The “Sustainable Markets Initiative” is a global effort launched by Charles III at the 2020 Davos Annual Meeting, aimed at accelerating the global net-zero transformation through corporate collaboration. He emphasized that “pressure creates talent,” urging CFOs to embrace the challenge and work together to build climate resilience in supply chains and markets, thus achieving mutual growth for both businesses and society.

Mauricio Rodas, former Mayor of Quito, pointed out that the global response to extreme heat, the “silent killer,” remains insufficient. “While many people are discussing climate change, few focus on extreme heat,” Rodas explained. Unlike climate disasters such as hurricanes or floods, extreme heat does not have the same visual impact, as people cannot directly witness deaths caused by high temperatures, leading to lower attention on the issue. He emphasized that extreme heat must be recognized as part of the climate crisis to protect the increasingly vulnerable urban population.

Funding Challenges and the Need for a New Narrative

Rodas highlights that cities face substantial financial challenges in addressing climate change. As more climate responsibilities shift to urban areas, city officials are not only expected to manage infrastructure but also to mitigate extreme weather and climate impacts. However, most cities lack direct financial resources to fulfil these critical roles. Rodas insists that the international financial system needs to be adjusted to support cities in their climate actions. “Over 70% of CO₂ emissions originate from cities; this is where the fight against climate change will be won or lost.” He calls for a realignment of funding to channel resources towards urban infrastructure transformation, essential for meeting the targets of the Paris Agreement.

Driving Adaptive Policies and Shaping a New Narrative

Rodas stresses the importance of reframing the climate change narrative to make it clear that it is not only about the environment but also about improving quality of life. He cites his experience as Mayor of Quito, where he oversaw the construction of the city’s first metro line. While the project was part of the city’s climate response, it primarily improved residents’ commuting experiences. Rodas believes that climate policies and projects must be closely tied to public well-being to encourage more city leaders to engage. “If mayors understand that climate initiatives are about enhancing and safeguarding lives, they will be far more inclined to support them,” he says.

In his final call to action, Rodas urges, “We cannot waste any more time. Extreme heat is claiming lives, and we need to act boldly and urgently.” As global temperatures rise, the Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Centre has launched the Extreme Heat Resilience Alliance (EHRA) and the “City Champions for Heat Action” initiative. These programmes aim to support cities worldwide in implementing measures to address extreme heat, ultimately protecting the health and lives of urban residents.
